Posted by Eugene Lehnert on April 30, 2009 at 11:13 pmWhat algorithm does Final Cut use when resizing a shot using the motion tab?

May 1, 2009 at 1:25 amHi Eugene,
FC have three quality levels when rendering Motion Effects.
You can choose in the sequence setting Linear/Normal/Best.
No idea of the filters that FC use for up/downscaling.
If you use the “Rotation” function, all those Motion Effects will be rendered Linear.

May 1, 2009 at 7:12 amEugene I can tell what it isn’t….it is not Bi-Cubic like
it is in Sony Vegas.I wish apple would address that, its a real pain not having
good high quality resizing….kinda comes in handy huh? -

May 1, 2009 at 11:04 pmYeah. I use our UKON to upconvert and downconvert the video material that I get but sometimes I use the motion tab to blow stuff up by a small percentage when it’s progressive material. I wanted to see if I could get a plug-in that used similar algorithms as the Snell & Willcox Ukon.

May 3, 2009 at 4:55 amDepends on sequence settings. I tested these once using anappropriate test pattern. Fast setting uses (bi)linear interpolation (same as used in canvas). Normal and Best settings appear to add fairly sharp anti-alias filtering, couldn’t tell how the interpolation method changed.
Best is slightly better than Normal, Normal is way better than Fast.

May 3, 2009 at 1:26 pmThe FC manual have been really improving with the years but still miss some very important info.
Nothing about those filters.
