You’re right, Chris. I was thinking of the MXO2.

Brad, in my original post I said LED, but meant LCD. As my MBP has DVI outs it was easy to connect to the MXO and Cinema 23. Other than reading about them, I’ve no experience with mini DisplayPorts. I’d go with the advice given above by very experienced users.

My vote would be Prores or 8-bit uncompressed as they’d maintain the best quality throughout. Before re-digitizing your PhotoJPG footage, I’d convert one clip to as a test to see if it’d be worth re-digitizing.

What’s the delivery format? Often, that drives your edit format decision.

I’m not familiar with the MXO2. But, I have a general question. Are the J-3 and MXO connected to house sync? Or, is the ref from the MXO going to the J-3? Just a thought.

Checkout this tool for Motion. I think it does what you need. From their website, “Traditionally, creating multiple graphics has involved manually changing the text contents in Motion and saving each version to a separate file. AutoMotion radically accelerates this task by merging text data with Motion templates to create multiple versions in seconds.”

You may be okay. You can’t judge visual quality by watching your computer. You need an external video monitor. If you are seeing FCP’s playback in your camera, that is closer to reality than FCP’s Canvas. However, I suggest you attach a larger video monitor to the output of your camera to be sure. Small screens cover up a lot of problems that become visible on a larger monitor. You could also make a test DVD of a short piece of footage and play that back to check quality. If your final use is the web, then do a short test converting your video to the final file (h.264, flv, etc.) and see how that plays back.
