  • Audio sync with mxo2 mini

    Hi all,

I’ve just recently picked up a new mxo2-mini (non-max version). Am using it to uprez some SD footage.

I am capturing from a Sony J-3 deck, digibeta into FCP via the MXO2mini. FCP is on the MXO DVCPRO HD 1080i 50 preset.

Pictures and audio all look good and synced on capture preview.

Once on the timeline however, the audio gradually and incrementally leads the video. By 1hr14mins, the audio is leading by 12 frames.

Picture is fine, I’ve done a test with BITC and am happy its not the video that is slipping.

    Any ideas?

    Shane,

Yeah the scale input is all set and in general the picture is much better than i’d hoped for being an uprez and all.

A wee bit more investigation into the audio seems to indicate that the drift ebbs in and out, though that may just be the lipsync on the master.

I’ve dropped matrox a line, hopefully hear back, until then I have resolved myself to ingest the whole thing in 10 minute chunks.

    Cheers

OK…in the MXO2 mini system prefs, in the AV INPUT…you chose SCALE INPUT FOR CAPTURE, right?

Hmmm…50i SD to 50i HD…typically you see shift if you go 60 to 24. You PAL guys typically have everything match and work fine.

Call Matrox yet? That would be the first thing I did. MXO2 mini is new, and I haven’t had the pleasure of using one yet for review.

I’m not familiar with the MXO2. But, I have a general question. Are the J-3 and MXO connected to house sync? Or, is the ref from the MXO going to the J-3? Just a thought.

I generally don’t use house sync when capturing…only when outputtting.

    John,

The J3 has REF, in fact its the only thing that has REF at the moment, which seems kinda redundant.. however.. as far as i can discern, the mxo2mini has no dedicated REF input.

    cheers

You’re right, Chris. I was thinking of the MXO2.

Just a thought. When I was working on a doc using a J30 a while back, we noticed audio drift problems when batch digitising if the ‘preview’ button was checked in the audio tab of the capture tool. Took this off and no problems after that. Admittedly it was a J30 digitising rushes over firewire, but may be worth trying…

A wee bit more testing has resulted in me ingesting same footage, same deck onto same drives (Firewire 800 single drive non raid lacie) at 720p rather than 1080i.

This time the audio is in sync throughout.

Could it be a drive issue? Is the stress of 1080i substantially more than 720p that either my capture drives, or even the mxo2 mini cant handle sustained capturing over long clips? FCP didn’t flag up any dropped frame issues and I’ve certainly had no issues with 1080i50 HDV before.

Still waiting to hear from matrox.

    cheers
