Hey all. Not as complicated as the interesting situation earlier this month, but I have a question regarding a doc I’m working on, and the best approach to digitizing and working with a mix of DV and BetaSX footage. It’s about 30-35 hours overall. We haven’t started post, though some footage was previously digitized. Here’s the types of footage:

60% of the footage is miniDV, shot SD 4:3 29.97 720 x 480. Not yet digitized, except a few clips to DV NTSC.

20% of the footage is PhotoJPG 720×486 29.97. Shot on BetaSX, it was all digitized over a year ago. If we don’t have to re-digitize, it would save some dollars. But if we have to, we have to.

20% of the footage is still to be shot in an undecided SD or HD format over the next year. I’ll have some input into that decision.

And, there’s a good possibility that we’d be looking to digitize some old VHS and Hi8 tapes as well, though we’d have to figure that out.

Any suggestions? Not sure what the best approach is with the mix. Digitize everything to ProRes, or is that a waste of hard drive space for the DV? Thanks for any ideas.

What’s the delivery format? Often, that drives your edit format decision.

Good question–still undecided, as it hasn’t been sold to a broadcaster yet. As most of the footage is SD, I would guess that it’ll be SD–so maybe BetaSP or DigiBeta.

My vote would be Prores or 8-bit uncompressed as they’d maintain the best quality throughout. Before re-digitizing your PhotoJPG footage, I’d convert one clip to as a test to see if it’d be worth re-digitizing.
