Sounds like output from a Flip camera. I recently had a client show up with Flip files. I used Compressor to convert them to ProRes so I could edit. I was happily surprised by the result. Delivery was H.264.

You don’t mention if you have a Kona or similar I/O device. The Kona can downconvert to SD cropping the sides (or letterbox) as it does, so you can play out to your DigiBeta. Would that work?

I believe FCP always assumes a sample rate of 48k unless it’s changed in the seq settings. Try making a new seq, set the audio to 44.1, and then drag in the file and see if it works.

Sorry to state the obvious, but you are double-clicking right? If you simply use the finder, can you open and see folders within your various drives? If so, try trashing FCP prefs and repairing permissions. If not, your OS might be corrupt (but try repairing permissions before doing anything radical). Also, it never hurts to run Disk Warrior.

It’s always best to edit using only one codec. I suggest you convert your PAL DV to HDV. Yes, you’re going to have to blow up the DV and the quality will suffer. If you have a hardware card like a Kona you’ll get the best up-convert results. Otherwise, Compressor will probably do the best job. Be sure to turn on Frame Controls and choose Best for all the quality settings.

Try using the 3-way color corrector. Crush the blacks, lower the saturation a lot and boost mids &/or highs. Play around with those controls and you should get close.
