We recently had a client give a bunch files shot on a Flip camera (cheap). We converted to ProRes in Compressor, edited in FCP, and the results were much better than expected.

Both excellent products. However, I thought the video missed mentioning what I consider the most important feature of ShotPut – clip verification. It slows down the off-load a couple of minutes, but you can be more confident that your off-loaded clips are good. I still play a few seconds of every off-loaded clip with HD Log (another Imagine product) before formatting the card for re-use.

Assuming it was captured properly they should be able to step through the timeline frame-by-frame and see the extra frames added by the pulldown process. You might also try using MediaInfo

The timebase is 59.94. If your setting is 24P the footage would have been recorded with pulldown added (24 over 60i). I believe that camera also shoots 24PA which allows FCP to easily remove the pulldown resulting in 23.976 clips. All these files would show up as 59.94 even though they are 24P or PA.

The HPX500 has built-in ND filters. When we want less depth of field, we dial in some ND and open up the exposure.

Use a Secondary Room in Color, apply blur and track the object. This is easy as long as no objects cross the object being blurred. Then, you’re into roto.

Going from PAL to NTSC is more complicated than changing from mov to mpeg-2. I’ve always used the Natress standards conversion software. https://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconversion.htm I believe Compressor can do standards conversion, but I’ve never tried it, and I’ve read it’s not as good as Nattress. Once you have the NTSC 4×3 mov you’ll have to drop it in a 16×9 timeline and then zoom in to fill the frame. Doing this will cause the image to soften. I’d do the initial conversion to ProRes.
