Ty’s right about mp3s being a potential problem. Final Cut, for example, does not care for mp3s. It (and most pro NLEs) expect to see aiff or wav files at 48kHz (not 44.1 as with CDs). That way the audio should sync well with the video. And slate takes so you can easily line up your audio and video during post.

You workflow is fine. It’s best to use an ac3 (Dolby) audio file instead of an aiff as it’s 1mbps less overhead (and a smaller file) for the DVD player. But, don’t use the ac3 preset without changing two parameters in the Inspector > Encoder > Audio tab: dialog normalization from -27 to -31 and data rate to 192 (it may already be 192, but check); and in the Preprocessing tab make sure Compression Preset is set to None. I’m pretty sure there’s a good tutorial about this on Ken Stone’s site. It’s also covered in Compressor’s user manual.

That content should have been installed with FCS. I think you can elect to install or not install it so maybe it didn’t get installed. Look at the audio content disk (or disks) and see if there’s an installer, or you can probably just copy the data into the proper places in the library. I’m not in my office so I can’t tell you off the top of my head where that content goes. It’s probably in the manual.

Do you have any other devices connected to the FW port? If so, disconnect them and see if that makes a difference. While you can usually daisy chain drives, adding a camera (and other devices) will often cause problems. Even though the Mac has multiple FW ports, it only has one controller for all of them, which is why it can be “confused” by multiple devices. If that doesn’t help, have you tried the 3-way color corrector to lighten the clips?

Are you using any demo plugins? Some of them put blocks on the screen until you purchase the plug. I don’t remember which ones. But I’ve read post about this. Of course, it could be something else, too. Can you post an example?

I’d help to know what kind of Mac you’re using. HDV is always going to take longer to process as it’s a long-GOP codec. If you engage Qmaster, Compressor will use multiple cores and run a lot faster. On my Mac Pro encoding mv2s for DVDs takes a little over real time. H.264 will probably take longer. I’ve never timed an H.264 encode. You might find more info about this by searching the Compression Techniques forum.

Is your Ederol recording at 48k sample rate? If not, open the audio file in QuickTime Pro or an app like MPEG Streamclip (free, if you’re not familiar with it) and export the file with the sample rate set to 48k (16 or 24 bit). Then import that file and see if it syncs.

It might not be an interlacing issue. Are you perhaps seeing moire patterns. This often happens when shooting tight checks or stripes. Men’s patterned ties are a common culprit. Here’s an example. You’ll notice the effect increases as you approach the center of the circle as the lines get closer. You might try adding a small amount of blur to reduce the effect. I’ve also heard of folks using an unsharp mask filter. If this is indeed moire, the best solution is to advise clients not to wear clothing that will cause moire. During the shoot playing with the focus can help, but that rarely eliminates the moire.
