The black is most likely due to the lack of a codec on the playing machine. The reduced options in RT is probably due to the clip having a non-edit codec like H.264, which is most used with Flip and other inexpensive cams. If you always use one of the codecs from FCP’s Easy Setups, you’ll have full RT functionality and many less edit issues.

We have a 2000 and control it with the standard Sony 29.97 VTR protocol selectable in the L&T Capture Settings tab. The 9-pin cable goes from our Kona breakout box to the Sony remote in. When I’m capturing various media with different origins, I usually convert everything to ProRes or the most used media format.

Try a lower-quality codec like DVCPro50 (DV50). That should make the files smaller. You can go as low as DV, but it will be DV quality = not great. Many Flip models make pictures better than DV so I’d avoid it. This is important! Make sure your audio is 48kHz sample rate, 16 or 24 bit depth and Linear PCM to ensure proper sync in FCP.

I recall a post that attributed this to dirty contacts in the camera and/or card. Unfortunately, the artifacts are in the clip. If they’re not too big, perhaps a bad-pixel fixing plugin like Reincarnation from Digital Heaven would help remove them.

Have you considered using stills as examples in your gallery? That could go very quickly. If your client is experienced enough with color grading, they should be able to make a decision with stills. Show the original frame, and then a couple of different grades of it.

So many things can cause stuttering. What’s your frame rate? 24fps will often stutter on vertical edges. The American Cinematographer Manual has a table of pan speeds above which you will see stuttering. If you haven’t tried encoding in Compressor with Frame Controls on and appropriate settings at best, try that.

DH_Reincarnation will only affect an 8×8 pixel area. You might be able to apply a few instances of it to work with larger areas. Another thought is to duplicate the video layer and put it on the track above. Apply some blur to it, use a matte and play with different blend modes to see if that helps.

I don’t believe JPEG A is an edit codec. You should try with one of the codecs that appear in FCP’s Easy Setups. They are all edit codecs. A couple of codecs which should work are ProRes or DCVPro50 (DV50). Try one of those and see if it works better for you.
