i have a 20 minutes ProRes422 sequence that needing to go through MagicBulletLooks for coloring. Varying portions of the sequence will be getting different looks. i need to prepare a video gallery of suggested looks for the client to proof the looks and select the looks they prefer and approve for the final cut. The gallery will be presented to them on-line and will be hosted on my sever. Considering the render times on the ProRes timeline i need to downsample the sequence in-order to crunch the looks within the acceptable time frame. What is the best workflow in this case ? here is the specs on the sequence and my edit station :

    -HDV footage > 20 minutes edited ProRes422 > DVD output + On-line ( Vimeo, HD YouTube … )

    – MacPro Quad 2.6 + 6 GiG RAM + ATi 4870 Graphic Card + 3TB Raided Scratch + FCP 6.0.6 + MagicBullet Looks 1.2

Have you considered using stills as examples in your gallery? That could go very quickly. If your client is experienced enough with color grading, they should be able to make a decision with stills. Show the original frame, and then a couple of different grades of it.

Yah, i tried that. We even went as far as creating a 90 frame sample just for the proofing and applying the looks. They really want to see their options on the actual cut footage. As i am writing this my wife is preparing a reasonable bill for the proofing service that was not in the original draft of contract. i have a feeling it is not going to be smooth communications from this point on.

i have downsampled a copy of my sequence in compressor to Highest Quality H264 and 25% of frame size. I am going to bring that video to FCP and cut it to main segments of the production. Then i will be able to apply variety of looks to those segments and render a lot faster. So far this is the best solution i came up with and i am open to any idea aside from dropping the assignment.

When checking looks with clients out of the suite, we always send stills. If they want to see moving video, they’re generally in the suite or we simply upload.

You should be charging your standard hourly rate for the proofs since you’re doing color grading. This is what we do with all our color grade sessions except for broadcast shows where we’re generally just making everything look “good.”

Some body had done a similar proofing service for them ( at no extra charge ) before and they assume that is the norm. i spent most of the weekend and today to prepare looks samples. We are attaching a modest bill for 50% Hourly rate. If they don’t accept the charges, i am not sure about my options.
