With P2 or AVCHD you Log & Transfer. It’s pretty straight-forward. I like the process as I can review takes, set in and outs and add notes, etc. The transfer process is faster than I am, and as the transfers happen in the background, it never slows me down. Compared to the Log & Capture workflow, it’s much faster. There may be software that makes the AVCHD files appear instantly in FCP (there is for P2), but I still don’t mind the L&T workflow as I still have to take the same amount of time to review, pull takes, etc.

  • This is usually a function of mismatched sample rates. Pro video sample rate is 48kHz while CD audio is 44.1kHz. I always suggest using 48kHz for video, but 44.1 will work. But, it’s important that both rates match.

This is slightly off-topic, but I was under the impression that every version of ProRes is 10 bit. If true, IMHO, that doesn’t change any of the above recommendations.

I’m not at all sure about this, but I recall that MPEG Streamclip may have had an option for installing an avi component. Check to see if that exists and if so, was it installed. I know there’s a check box for recompress when exporting QTs. Make sure that’s unchecked.

Read up on the Boris Title 3D Generator in FCP. You can build a list and then reveal it by keyframing the crop parameter.

If when you say the HD is letterboxed are you looking at the SD down-conversion? If yes, you can probably change the conversion to Anamorphic in the Format tab of the AJA Control Panel. At least that’s how it works with a Kona 3. Are you feeding ref video to the Kona? If yes, has anything happened to the sync or black burst generator? If not, maybe you should try that. Just to check, have you run an AJA System Test on your drive to confirm its speed?

I agree with Richard, but I suggest changing the camera to 48k (if that’s possible) as that sample rate is what most editors (sound & video) would expect to see. And definitely record wav or aif audio files.

The scaling is probably the reason you have to render DVCPro5r0 is 720×480. For widescreen it needs to be anamorphic, not 1280×720. Another reason to use ProRes – it can be 1280×720.

I convert all non-standard codecs that come into the shop to ProRes422 before editing. And no rendering is needed until you apply filters, etc. to the point your system can’t keep up. With terabyte drives costing $85 there’s no reason to worry about file size. You should try ProResLT which will produce smaller files than ProRes422. You could even try ProRes Proxy and see what you think image-wise. Do not use ProResHQ.

I’ve converted many Flip HD clips to ProRes and they look a lot better than I expected.

Don’t forget you have a lite version of Primatte in Motion. It’s better than FCP’s keyer. I’d also add that the color space of the camera will have a lot to do with keying success.

If I hit letter L twice, that’s about as fast as I can monitor and understand. After that, the audio is ng.
