If most of your footage is SD I’d use a SD timeline. Use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip to down-convert your Flip footage to SD before you edit. That way you’ll avoid a lot of rendering.

I agree with Rafael. Run DiskWarrior. I run it once a month as preventive maintenance. BTW, my old G5 still works fine.

I’m not sure how FCP hands an Express project, but one solution might be to bring your project to an edit facility with FCP and a Kona card (or similar) and cross-convert out to tape or to a second machine (with FCP & Kona) which captures it as a file.

Not much you can do. Reflections/echo are very complex signals. My only suggestions are try some + or – eq around the reflection frequency range. And, sometimes taking away in the low hundreds of Hz can help. Second thought is to float in some masking SFX under the dialogue.

This happened to me the other day when a client brought in an HDV deck. No matter what we tried we couldn’t capture HDV. It turned out he had his deck set to down-convert to DV. When we switched it HDV all was well.

I was asked this question recently and I requested ProRes. The files will be large, but look very nice. All the zooms were done in Camtasia so I don’t know which app is best for that use. I suspect it’s best to stay om Camtasia. FCP’s scaling isn’t that great.
