1080 media in 720 sequence, wanting to output to 1080
I’m using FC Express, so bear with me. My media files are in Apple Intermediate Codec 1920 x 1080 29.97fps, but somehow the sequence frame size is 1280 x 720. The question is, what happens if I want to export to H.264 1920×1080? Will it artificially scale the video up from 720 to 1080, or will it just use the media files that are already 1080 and not scale? I have chroma key and color correction filters rendered in the sequence, and I don’t want the 1080 output to look pixelated. Do I have to copy to a new sequence?

Hi Ben,
If your media is 1080 and you want to keep the size, why are you editing in a 720 sequence?
Make a 1920×1080 sequence and edit on that.

Hi Rafael,
Because it was a mistake. Someone else started the sequence, then I came in later and edited it, not realizing it was 720. Now it’s all edited and rendered in 720 (it’s a 90 minute sequence), and I don’t understand how these things work in terms of what the software actually does with the media. I’m assuming that the rendered files are now 720, and if I export to 1080, it’ll blow them back up again artificially but they’ll still be at the lower resolution really. And I’m also assuming that if I copy my work into a new 1920×1080 sequence, I’ll have to render for 26 hours all over again. I have yet to experiment and find out, but am wondering if you know if my assumptions are true or what the best way to handle the situation is.

I’m not sure how FCP hands an Express project, but one solution might be to bring your project to an edit facility with FCP and a Kona card (or similar) and cross-convert out to tape or to a second machine (with FCP & Kona) which captures it as a file.

Hi Ben,
Skipping the downscaling (1080>720) probably the render will be shorter.
Anyway is to you to decide to expend some extra time in doing thing properly.
For me to scale down and scale up again is an absolute NO-NO.
To do the things properly, copy and paste in a 1920×1080 and Remove the attributes.
