In the Motion Tab there is a Distort twirl down. Open that up and stretch the image to fit. If the SD footage is on tape you could recapture it with a Kona card (or similar) and uprez that way. You’ll have better results. Also, you can do it in Compressor as its scaling is better than FCP’s. Be sure to turn on Frame Controls and increase the resizing quality setting to Best. I’d try a short test first to see if using Compressor (it will take a while) is worth it. Also, you’re going to have to adjust the timebase of the HD to 25fps. You can do that in Compressor, too. And, checkout Graeme Nattress’ Standards Converter.

  • What are your sequence settings? Sounds like the pixel aspect ration may be set incorrectly.

You could try saving first version prefs with Preference Manager then restoring to the new FCP version. I have no idea if this will work, but it’s a handy program and works with most, if not all, the programs in FCS.

This happens to me occassionally and I ignore it. If it a render file that’s active, I re-render, if necessary. And if no clips come up red, I tell FCP to forget about it.

ProResHQ is overkill and can cause issues in some situations. Export a self-contained Quicktime using Current Settings. Drag that to Compressor and use one of the Best settings presets. Don’t push the data rate settings beyond the preset. If you do that you can experience playback issues. I’ve never had a DVD not play on a set-top box. However, even doing everything properly you will find some computers won’t play your DVD. I’ve had situations where it works fine on one client’s machine, but his co-worker can’t play the same DVD. There’s been a lot of discussions over the years about that, but no answers I’ve seen.

I’d stay mono. That way you can use them together or separately as you described. If you use them as a stereo pair, the dialogue will not be centered, as one channel will be louder than the other (per your 1/4 – 3/4 level setting scheme) and the dialogue will be skewed to that side. If you want to use stereo so a gain change in one channel is matched in the other, just set the pan to 0. Then the two channels will both be panned center.

  • DV is what’s killing your quality. Why not work in a version of ProRes – LT or 422. You’ll only get real time performance from existing EasySetups. You can try customizing an Easy Setup and see how that works.

It’s looking for a specific file or files. Click on the hard drive so it opens up. If the file’s there, it will be highlighted.

Most folks recommend not having the video data rate exceed 7.5 – 7.7 Mbps, particularly, if you’re using aiff audio which runs at 1.5 Mbps. You have a bit more leeway if you convert your audio to ac3 at 192 Kbps. However, if you push up the data rate too much, many DVD players will choke. I rarely exceed 6.5 Mbps for video and always use ac3. Stwphen’s absolutely right about Compressor being faster. On our 8-core machine, we encode mv2 and ac3 at slightly faster than real time. You do, however, have to setup Qmaster to achieve speed gains thru multiple cores.

It sounds as if channels 1 & 2 are both mono and panned center. Double-click the audio track and look at the viewer. If you see two tabs labeled mono(a1) and mono(a2) you have mono audio. In the viewer you’ll also see a pan slider. It’s probably at 0 which is center panned. If it’s a stereo track you’ll see one tab called Stereo (a1a2). Here the pan control probably shows -1. This implies everything panned left, but it’s really panned left and right. You can change two mono tracks to stereo by selecting the two tracks and option-L and vice-versa.
