You can get an audio only preview by pressing the period (.) key on the keypad.
You can get a RAM preview with audio by pressing the asterix key (*) on the keypad.
Pressing the spacebar will not give you audio playback and will not give you a realtime preview.
If you aren’t getting realtime playback by doing a RAM preview I suggest you decrease the scale and resolution of the comp window for starters.JD

The animated strokes can be created using masks and the Stroke effect (EFFECT > RENDER > STROKE). Try playing around with the Start and End parameters. You can roughen up the lines using Roughen Edges (EFFECT > STYLIZE > ROUGHEN EDGES). Try Block Dissolve (EFFECT > TRANSITION > BLOCK DISSOLVE) to reveal the images. You can grade the footage using something like CC Toner (EFFECT > IMAGE CONTROL > CC TONER).

It works fine for me (AE 6.5 on MacOSX.3.8). Position is both spatial (motion path) and temporal (timeline).
