Great book, really will help you move on from simple to complex and the thought process on creating them. And Mr. Ebberts helped the author write it, so it’s got that going for it.

First question, maybe silly, but is it your .psd? Do you know that it has multiple layers? Just asking cause I’ve had clients send me “layered” files that were not.

Actually had a similiar looking problems years ago, back in the 4.5, 5.0 days. With a much much slower cpu and a lot less RAM. Wasn’t the import footage or codecs, but the computer. Would happen on all sorts of things that involved a lot of processing. New computer solved everything and haven’t had that problem in years.

Try the “secret” preferences screen(hold shift+cntl when opening preferences). Disable layer cache and turn on purge frames, say every 10 frames.

Doesn’t look like a solid white, but a lens flare with the brightness cranked up and scale cranked up then quickly going to 0 composited over the text, using add or screen.

Check with the publisher of the book. During a move I broke a CD from one of the Creating Motion Graphics series, sent an email to the publisher and they just sent me a new cd.

On the bottom-left of the timeline is a pulldown(fast menu). Open that up and go to audio data-there are multiple choices there. Along with that, if you hold down Cntl and move over the layer number(A1..A2) you will be given an arrow that will allow you to expand the layer, which will make it a lot easier to see the audio sample. Lastly, selecting the layer and hitting Cntl-Alt-K will decrease the size of the plot, while Cntl-Alt-L will increase it’s size.

Plots take awhile to draw, so I don’t leave them on much, but instead have created different timeline workspace views, “edit”, “audio”, “digitize” “effects”. Just have to hit Cntl-1, Cntl-2 and the avid switches workspaces. If you look up workspaces in the help, it will describes how to do it.

Sure. Edit your clips, select the tracks and make a mark in and out—then go to file, export then open up the options dialogue-choose custom(I think, not sitting at the avid right now) and set up your export.

Camtasia is pretty great. Has a free one month demo but it’s easily worth the 200-300 bucks they charge.

Didn’t have much to do today, so I took a quick shot at it.

Drag 3 copies of clip into timeline. Apply leave color to both layers.

On the top layer select a green from the grass.
Amount to decolor = 100%
Color to leave = 10%
tolerance = 20%

Middle layer-select orange from shirt.
Amount to decolor = 100%
Color to leave = 15%
tolerance = 20%

Set top layer to overlay. Precomp top two layers. Add “set matte” effect and use blue channel as matte and then invert matte. Add levels effect, and switch to alpha. I set imput black to 69, and imput white to 152.

Now use the precomp as a alpha matte. Still some masking involved, but a whole lot less. I didn’t spend a ton of time selecting the colors to for the “leave color” effect or playing with the tolerances—so if you play around you may get some better results, but, you’ll have removed almost all of the sky this way.

Very nice job, I messed around trying to recreate that look and didn’t come up with anything nearly that good. Think you could post the project files too. Love to see how how you accomplished it.
