As Job stated there is a limit on the total number of audio tracks you can play at once. If your audio is set, use the audio mixdown and replace the audio in the timeline. Before you replace it, I would make a new timeline with the original audio in case you need to make changes later.

Pan/zoom is a bit different than most effects, but what you described is how it’s supposed to work. The footage in the timeline is to be replaced by the .psd, tiff or pict you select once you apply the effect.
What you need to do is drop in any video of the duration you need for the pan/zoom. Drop the effect on the video and open up the effects editor. Click on the little square in the upper left corner and it will open the import dialogue, now select your picture. Change the from source to target and work on your shot.

Responding a little late, but if you haven’t, just thought see if you can recruit some help. Even if it’s just one person, they could watch a monitor for you and while wearing a headset and aiming the shotgun.
If you just do it yourself, you’ll probably have to mount a shotgun. And if your talent moves too much, there could be significant differences in the audio levels and tone.
If you’ve recently graduated you shouldn’t have much trouble recruiting people, or even better if you can afford it-look around your area and find a professional grip/audio guy. Might cost a little up front but could save you hours and hours of headaches while posting.

You want to enable time remapping. cntl-alt-t or under ‘layer’/’time’.
When enabled it will put keyframes at the first and last frame. Change the last keyframe to a hold keyframe, select &”cntl-alt-h”. Now just extend the layer to end of composition.

Along the same vein is the approval by committee process. These often provide for some really unique and unusual changes, particularly when they don’t watch it the video at the same time. Recently I received this list of changes.
1. Background color needs to be white.
2. yada
3. yada
4. yada
5. The text would look much better if we changed it to white.I thought about giving them white text over a white background—but just couldn’t pull the trigger on that one.

I’m sure someone else will offer a solution but this will work.
If you haven’t already done this, make each circle and individual layer in Illustrator, import as comp into AE. Complete the movement of all circles & name this comp Base.
Now if you have 6 circles, make 5 copies of the comp “base”. Base 1, Base 2, Base 3….
Open Base 1, change the top circle to stencil alpha.
Next open base 2, turn off the top layer, change layer 2 into a stencil alpha. On base 3, turn off layers 1 & 2, change layer 3 into a stencil alpha. Repeat for the 5 base copies.Create final comp, bring in the 5 copies, put your original as the lowest layer(6). For the five copies add the effect “fill” and select the color black. Now on all intersections, the circles turn to black.
