    Could one add blur along with the noise? How much noise? How much blur? Would the blur just reintroduce the banding?

    This may not work…. Create a new comp size solid and make the mask on that layer. Play with the settings for your modes for the layer and the mask both. Like screen and overlay, alpha, difference ect… I think I have done this before.

    I did what Jim recommended and it works nicely, except for some resident pieces in the corners. I mask these out to the point where the mask was cutting down the size of the photo. At the point of mask interference, I quickly expanded the mask out of the way and had a clean reverse shatter.

    I’m using shatter, caustics, and Stars and no crashing. Nice effects package BCC.

    you know — after reading this and what I’ve been through today with my computers THAT there is a huge consumer base ripe for the picking. I mean a large financial windfall to someone who wants to put out a platform like the Amiga. This frankenstein platform that is the PC is so patched together with DEAD body parts that it’s a real setup to get knocked off by something that works.
