[Mark Goodwillie] “I’ve tried H264 and ,avi???”

    Errrr….
NEITHER of which are supported by FCP. Read in the manual on which formats FCP supports natively.

I think there’s a lot more to it than just spitting out a file (maybe, not sure). Every time we have to do this it’s for cinema, and I always pass these along to another post house. Usually just send out an HDSR.

I remember back when I was training on Lightwave or something like that there was a user preference to set you skill level with the software. The higher the level the less it helped you along and the lower the level the more dialogue boxes popped up doubting what you were doing.
Maybe FCP should do the same.

I know this is going to sound retarded but have you changed the user options to “warn after capture” and also rebooted your computer?

Just curious what “practical purposes” are.
If it works for you then use it, but you just can’t compare apples to oranges and ignore what everyone here is telling you. Nobody is out to get you, they’re just giving you honest answers.
There’s a good reason why broadcast monitors are $$. If you are doing work for broadcast you simply must invest in a different monitor. Unfortunately what you see on that Dell is NOT what people will see on their tv’s. End of story.

February 2, 2011 at 9:53 pm in reply to: basic after effects composition settings question

[Ash Davis] ” I don’t know what settings you should use to make videos in.”

It totally depends on what you will be viewing it on. If you say it’s a big-screen tv, see what output options the tv has. If it has 1080p 23.98 or 1080i 59.94, then use one of the easy setups for HD, but you can do custom ones as well. Below.

    For 1080p 23.98

    1920×1080 Frame rate: 23.976

    For 1080i 59.94 (1080i)

    1920×10980 Frame rate: 29.97

    For 720p

    1280×720

Also, are you going to be playing from a blu-ray disk, dvd, or through an output from a computer playing a QT file? All of this matters.

I second this. In my opinion this is part of you get what you pay for. Luckily most of the layoffs we do here go to a post house to get posted or satellited out, so timecode accuracy isn’t much of an issue anymore.
    I haven’t found a fix here either…

    Kona 3, to D5 and HDSR. Usually 1 frame off…sometimes not…err!

    Hi Dan,
If this has anything to do with spots for Fox Home Video email me at:

I route stuff that goes to your company all the time and I want to make sure it’s not on our end. Granted it goes through a dub house first before it gets to you, but I want to make sure we aren’t the ones you are talking about. It would have been the first I’ve heard of it.
