I was not bad mouthing. I was stating that as far as I can tell the realtime downconvert feature in decklink only works for 1080i 29.97 to ntsc-sd 29.97 Yes you do have to read between the lines at the BM website, but we have 5 various Decklink cards here and they all work as advertised. The Kona transcoding is very nice but for the limited HD we do the BM products work for us.

And, I think if you read the fine print, it’s only 1080i.

A red channel almost always a physical problem with head to tape contact. The causes are many:

dirty heads, worn heads, bad tape, worn brushes, damaged tape path. If you have one deck that always gives you trouble them it’s time for some service. First try a digtial head cleaning tape. If one or two passes dosen’t fix the problem, then get the deck serviced.

I’d stay away from first generation AJ series decks. They do not age well and if you can find them with firewire, the implimentation is iffy. We have and AJ SD930 that is a much more reliable deck. They are probably old enough to find some used ones out there.

Dust will shorten the life of you gear by not allowing heat to dissipate. You can set up a cleaning schedule. and carefully blow or vacuum out the dust. Keep equipment off the floor and out of high-traffic areas. (corner bedroom?) If you have forced air heat or air-conditioning you could try a high-efficiency air filter. I don

FCP uses the clip name as the QT file name. FCP thinks there is a file on your scratch disc with the same name as the clip. If this is true, them maybe all you need to do is relink. If you are sure you media is gone then just modify the file name when you get the duplicate message. Add a “1” or “copy” and redig away.

Great safety tip. Bolt all racks together to help with center of gravity. We use trays also, as Spare bays where rental decks are temporarily installed. The problem with trays is maintenance. You need to get at the top of the decks for cleaning. It’s easy to slide decks in and out on rails. If the cable harness is long enough i guess you could slide the deck onto a box or cart in front of the rack for service.

The sony website should list the offical dealer for your area. See if you have any used resellers in your area. You might find a deal. HOWEVER rack rails all look similar but only work with specific gear. Sony decks only seem to match sony rails. So be careful if you go the used route. Personally I think you’ll save youself a lot of headaches if you buy the righ stuff.

Often the parent clip will not release the old render. Toggle the nested clip off on to force a render and it will update.

It’s been my experience that even poorly handled drives are much more survivable than you would think. Kept in thier anti-stat plastic, I think this would be a viable option for short term back-up. But yes, only for the cautious.
