HD monitoring with a DecklinkSP
Posted by Matt Short on January 4, 2007 at 3:36 pmExactly what HD formats are ‘all’ Decklink cards supposed to be able to downconvert? I’m trying to view DVCproHD on my SD monitor through a DecklinkSP SDI out. All Frames is checked in the View>External menu. I tried DVCproHD 720p24 clips & DVCproHD 720p60 clips with a variety of different settings on the Video Playback menu (trying to match up timecodes to standard def). I can only view the frame that I’m parked on when stopped, no realtime playback.

I do not know of any SD cards that can play HD content out.

From the Black Magic Design website in reference to their SD cards…

Seems like you have your answer right there. DVCPRO HD is not uncompressed HD.

Matt has a legitimate issue here. He copied and pasted directly from BM’s site, I don’t see any fine print about this.
Matt,
I have a DL SP card hooked up to my G4, I will put in an HD file and see what’s up with the DC, but in the meantime, open your DL control panel and mess around with your settings. This has to work. On my other machine, I’ve go a Kona LH which has very specific controls for downconverting to an SD monitor, haven’t tried this yet on my DL but will and I’ll get back to ya.

January 4, 2007 at 6:28 pmYes, he does. I was going to refrain from badmouthing, but since you said that I will not. Blackmagic is very shady on the actual workings of their cards compared to their marketing speak. For a time, they didn’t support 720p24 (or 60 for a while) downconversion and working with DVCPRO HD was a major pain in the butt. Matt is trying for a miracle that Blackmagic kind of suggests it can support, but it really can’t.
[Chris Poisson] “. On my other machine, I’ve go a Kona LH which has very specific controls for downconverting to an SD monitor,”
Yes, because it’s an HD card and supports all kinds of downconvert options. Matt is using an SD card that supports very specific kinds of HD, but you can’t read that from his post and it’s tough to find in any Blackmagic documents.
Matt, get yourself a Kona card and don’t worry about this again.

Many people don’t until they buy the card.

January 4, 2007 at 7:41 pmI was not bad mouthing. I was stating that as far as I can tell the realtime downconvert feature in decklink only works for 1080i 29.97 to ntsc-sd 29.97 Yes you do have to read between the lines at the BM website, but we have 5 various Decklink cards here and they all work as advertised. The Kona transcoding is very nice but for the limited HD we do the BM products work for us.

I tried this combo too and still nothing.
