Or do you still have to import footage/stills into the project as Avid media files? I know they can do different compressions realtime in the same timeline; how about stills with alphas?

December 9, 2005 at 3:01 am in reply to: Apple acknowledges 720p capture bug (subclips) in FCP 5I know some people get all hyped about more RT with various formats, alpha channels, etc. but if it’s going to look as bad as FCP’s RT looks right now, and still have to render to see what its’ really going to look like, then I’d end up rendering in smaller chunks anyway. I never got to see a Cinewave in action…did it’s multiformat RT look decent?

>>>If you capture to the DVCPro HD codec via HD-SDI, you’re good to go…
So is DVCPro HD not good enough for ANY graphics work? (Kind of like DVCam in SD???) Or just not for highend graphics – gradients, 3D animation, nice mograf work?
My typical workflow in SD with DV originated material is to capture in DV, but render graphics and titles uncompressed. Is this pretty much the same with DVCPro HD? Since the footage originated in DVCPro HD, is the main advantage to capturing uncompressed to play it realtime in an uncompressed project? I’ve just captured my first bit of Varicam so I’ve been reading up on workflow here and elsewhere. Thanks for tips.

>>>Quite seriously, they are working on HD news promos, but also HD local car dealer spots.
Our local PBS affiliate is doing their membership drives in HD. On a Discreet/Autodesk Fire HD!!! And the primary spokesperson is a sprightly seasoned citizen named Gladys. If she’s their target demo, I’d love to know
the percentage of target viewers that actually watch that station in HD.jm

It would be fun to know how many of these new quad G5s Apple actually sells. My guess is the numbers are going to be pretty low.

November 24, 2005 at 3:37 am in reply to: Io and Core Audio Devices Playing Well TogetherYou’re successfully using the IO with Soundtrack Pro for video output? This worked for me for a while and then just stopped one day. I have a Kona 2 as well and Soundtrack won’t output video through it either. Are there any tricks to getting consistent video out of STP with either device?
Thanks,

All this points back to Apple’s lack of attention to true pro features that need to be fixed. One of the biggest advantages FCP has had over Avid in terms of simple features is a soft drop shadow behind any layer with an alpha. Maybe Avids can do this now, I don’t know. If you have to change your rendering settings to Fastest, or 8-bit, or RGB, the quality of the final output isn’t as good as it could be. If you have to add a 1 pixel blur, likewise.

November 4, 2005 at 2:25 am in reply to: photoshop text layers w/ transparent backgrounds turning pink at random in FCPThe good and the bad of this is that there’s a workaround. Good, because you CAN make it work. Bad, because Apple knows this and will therefore probably never fix it. Or they’ll make it work better with their Photoshop knock-off, Aperture, but not with Photoshop. This doesn’t happen in DV or DVCPro50 sequences, only uncompressed, as far as I can tell. Which is ironic since that’s when you’re really working for high quality.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I have a question…did you compare render times between the old artifact-ed Photoshop file and the 300 dpi version?
Just curious-

I have this problem also, but I don’t think it’s related to the IO. More likely a problem with FCP itself. I pretty much avoid using Photoshop files for uncompressed graphics because of this and some other weird issues. Targa files with alpha channels are much more reliable and clean in my experience. I know, it takes longer to create them, but it just works. I’d be glad to hear from anyone who’s found a way around the green digital noise problem with psd files.
