I wouldn’t base my decision on the future web files, since those are the lowest quality and resolution delivery format you’ll be using. The 720p24pn should work great. If you knew the DVDs would be shown mostly on projector systems (classrooms?) you might consider keeping a true 24 frame progressive workflow all the way through editing and DVD creation, since progressive material looks much better than interlaced if you project it.

That’s my question. I’ve done the clip repair, I can now play it with the camera, but when I try to import in FCP, I get the error message “One or more P2 clips failed to import; probable incomplete or corrupt clips.” Next I’ll try to install the P2 Viewer software on my PC and see if I can wrangle the clip that way.
Jan? Any ideas???

I miss how realtime in Avid meant realtime to tape at full quality, not “dynamic” realtime in which the graphics degrade; in FCP you still have to render everything before going to tape if you want full quality. And you don’t want to get me started about the superiority of Avid’s media management…

operator error confirmed. Now how to get the darn thing to import…

great tip. Thanks. I can now play the clip from the P2. So the issue is how to get it into Final Cut Pro successfully. I know I could play it out of the component outputs and capture it in FCP, but I’d really like to get it to import properly; I can’t imagine that converting it to analog component is going to maintain the quality of a digital conversion on import.

I don’t know if it’s common or not, but I’ll definitely be doing some more tests with interval recordings before I count on them for anything important. I’m sure it’s not common or we’d be hearing a lot more about it.

It does not play from the card, I can only see the first frame. I’m on FCP 5.1. Thanks for taking the time to help me figure this out. I had hoped to hear about some magic button from Jan Livingston, but I’m beginning to think there isn’t one.

I was able to select the clip, and then select the Repair command. after doing this, I could see the first frame of the clip in the P2 browser, but FCP still gives a “corrupted clip” error message when I try to import the clip. Any other fixes out there?

Well if your design department is still locked in to the Digital Voodoo cards and codec, as it sounds, I can understand why they have to wait for driver updates. I had one of those cards when I first started with FCP, and had many headaches that were solved by abandoning the card and switching to AJA hardware for capture.

could it be a PAL thing ??
waves could be pulsing at a different rate than here in the US?
maybe the hvx is ‘smart’ enough to know when it is in PAL land***Well it happens to be the Mediterranean, Italian Riviera to be exact, but I didn’t want to rub it in. That must be it, the PAL thing. Or maybe the camera refuses to record past the midnight transition since then the timecode would roll over to zero. Can’t have that.
Riddle me this…in interval mode, is the HVX recording individual frames? Or a stream of video? Maybe I could extract the frames somehow???
