Offload time with my Powerbook to an external firewire drive is about 5-6 minutes for an 8 gig card. Shooting 720 pn you’ll have 20 minutes of shooting time per card. So it gives you enough time to shoot continuously.

With FCP 5.0, I had problems with slowdowns after Photoshop had been open for a while; even after I quit Photoshop, the slowdowns in FCP were noticeable. This seems to have been fixed by one of the most recent versions. I still have some issues if I get greedy and try to encode files with Cleaner and use FCP at the same time, but I’ve never lost any work due to these issues.
As you get accustomed to how fast your system works with FCP, you’ll learn to notice when things aren’t working up to normal speed, if there are any problems with other software running.

DG Systems and Fastchannel have now merged to become DG Fastchannel. You’ll have a lot more success uploading mpeg-2 files to Fastchannel than DG, so you should probably give them a call before you buy any software.

You would use a Powerbook with Final Cut Pro, and output video from the camera via the firewire port. Then capture with FCP, using a PCMCIA Firewire card to connect an external drive to the laptop, and capturing the footage to this drive. I’m not sure if the camera outputs all formats via firewire; I’m still experimenting with this.

For anything that doesn’t require you to move around a lot (interviews for instance), you could just record directly to a hard drive, or through a laptop to a hard drive using a NLE on the laptop. Then save the P2 and Firestore for run and gun. But realistically, if you don’t have budget for an assistant, you’re probably going to work all day shooting and then several hours in the evening backing up footage. As much as I like the HVX, if this were my project I’d shoot tape.

MainConcept is great quality but it sometimes alters the contrast and gamma levels, and there are no adjustments inside the software to correct this. They’re support people tell me they plan to have these adjustments in the next version. It’s about the best quality software encoder I’ve used, although I send out mpeg-2 files created in Cleaner for digital spot distribution…extremely high bit rate since they’re going to air, not DVD. Hardware is definitely the best quality.

Agreed…it may output those dark green sections realtime, but you have to render them to make sure they’re full quality. It’s not supposed to be that way, but I’ve had enough issues that I play it safe.

Thanks for the reply Jan. I’ve tried changing the settings in FCP now. Still doesn’t work, after matching the settings in FCP to the clip info from the card. I can play the clip on the P2 card, but can not get it to import into FCP. Is there any way to force the clip to open in another program that might export a Quicktime?
