importing interval footage in FCP
Could use a tip on importing a time lapse shot from a P2 card into Final Cut Pro. FCP says the file is corrupt…it may be, since I can’t preview playback of the file using the camera and P2 card, but this is my first try with interval recording so I’d like to make sure it’s not an operator error. Should I be able to play the frames I’ve captured with the camera and P2? I was using a 720p 30p record setting.

Yes you should be able to play the clip back directly. Just make sure you are in 720 30p for playback. What were your interval settings?

My settings were Video mode, 720 30p, with the interval set at 2 seconds. I could see the camera recording a frame every 2 seconds, but I can’t play the resulting clip off the P2 card or import it with FCP. And of course on my Powerbook I can’t open the MXF files directly. Any ideas?

Sounds as if your version of the OS and FCP is not as current as it needs to be.
the Min specs for the import of P2 HD content is 10.4.3 or later and FCP 5.04 – anything less will result in the problems you are having.
the is no free MXF preview app on the mac currently.

If you cannot play the clip in the camera then that clip must have a problem.
Of course you have powered down, removed the battery. Re-attach battery, power-up and checked again? Try recording a normal clip and see if you can play back. And of course you have the camera set to 720p 30p???Mike Schrengohst

OK, thanks for the suggestions. I think the clip must be corrupted somehow. I’m on 10.4.4 and FCP 5.1, so it’s not a version problem. I can import other P2 clips just fine. I left the camera on a balcony to record sunset/sunrise over the ocean, and the camera was plugged into AC power, but somehow the next morning it had turned itself off, and this probably didn’t allow the clip to be finalized. Not sure why it turned itself off…even if it was the standby feature, the camera was recording for hours. There was also plenty of room left on the P2 card. Oh well. I’ll try again.

which ocean are you photographing ?
could it be a PAL thing ??
waves could be pulsing at a different rate than here in the US?
maybe the hvx is ‘smart’ enough to know when it is in PAL land🙂

Someone else reported losing a timelapse shot that A/C was interrupted on so it must need to finalize the shot. Too bad. It’s probably hard to absolutely protect against unless you periodically interrupt and save the shot then restart. Don’t bump it though!

While it’s great that we can do interval shooting without wear-n-tear on a tape mechanism at all, may I suggest a different solution?
I got very good HD time-lapse footage from a Canon S50 and a laptop using Canon’s remote software (free with the camera). It’s easier to connect with a huge battery and the laptop has it’s built in UPS anyway…Sometimes I made more than a full day this way.

maybe the hvx is ‘smart’ enough to know when it is in PAL land***Well it happens to be the Mediterranean, Italian Riviera to be exact, but I didn’t want to rub it in. That must be it, the PAL thing. Or maybe the camera refuses to record past the midnight transition since then the timecode would roll over to zero. Can’t have that.
Riddle me this…in interval mode, is the HVX recording individual frames? Or a stream of video? Maybe I could extract the frames somehow???
