Well hopefully you’re able to bill by the hour and they’ll learn a lesson from the price they have to pay. Sometimes logging tapes doesn’t even help; if there are very small timecode breaks, you won’t see them until FCP chokes on them when trying to capture. It’s true that Avid handles TC breaks much quicker than FCP, this is because it switches to control track to create the preroll, starts rolling forward then switches back to timecode just before it starts to capture the clip.

I guess I’ve just gotten used to it being this way in NLE world…
So those of you that don’t like the way FCP does this, what about those times when you need to cut out 1 frame? Isn’t it easier to hit i,o,delete than to hit i, arrow forward, o, delete? Or would you rather have the option to hit i, o and have a 0 frame duration after doing so?
Seems like this is one of those things Apple could write into the prefs if they really wanted to.

What’s the menu path to display the firmware version on the HVX-200?

I have had no issues importing P2 media from P2 store, using 5.1.2. Have not tested yet with 5.1.4 but will do so soon. Based on other reports, I keep waiting for something to go wrong but so far it has been working OK.

One note about Episode though…I like the interface, it encodes all the formats you’ve requested but so far I have not been able to get an Episode-encoded mpeg-2 file past DG System’s Drop Box quality control process. DG says there may be a bug in the current rev of the Episode software. The fault could just as easily lie with DG’s ingesting software as it seems exremely finicky. But if you plan to buy Episode to encode mpeg-2 for digital spot delivery you should know it may or may not work for you. I’m still testing so I may yet land on a settings combination that works, but for now the folks at Episode recommended stepping back a version until they get the issue resolved.

Hey CharlieX2, I get where you’re coming from. I’d never say that either Final Cut or Avid is better than the other overall, but there are some key “pro” features that Apple has never really fixed. Like the source in-point sort feature in EDL export (never has worked). Like all the problems with renders in 10 bit sequences over the years. And like all the features that got screwed up with the 5.1.3 release (had third party vendors had access to the software these problems most likely would have been caught before release). I agree with you that there are some important fixes that need to be made to FCP and I hope they are addressed with version 6.

>>>What settings are you using?
My license of Mainconcept is on the PC and is at least a year old, so I have not tested it recently. What is your source video?
10 bit uncompressed QuicktimeDid you look at the settings I’ve posted and test them with all the other processing filters off?
Have not done any tests with Mainconcept because I’m trying to get my investment in Episode to pay off first. Also if Mainconcept still has no adjustments for video levels, and I’m sending a file without bars and tone I don’t really see the point, at least in terms of QC. But if I can’t get Episode working I’ll try Mainconcept again.Joe Murray

Typical 29.97 output from telecine, with footage shot at 24 on film. I’ve been testing with a settings file from Episode Pro that was sent to me by DG – they said it was a settings file one of their customers is using with success, so that may be your settings file already but I’ll be glad to try yours if you’re willing to email it to me. joe at editatjoes dot com is the address. Only the first “at” is a symbol.
I do have a fast ftp I can post a file to if you’d like to take a run at it, but the uncompressed file is just over a gigabyte. Do you have time to deal with this? I really appreciate the offer to help.
I’ll go ahead and post the file here just in case-

Thanks very much-

I’ve tried Mainconcept before, and the mpegs were good quality but the gamma levels were incorrect, and last time I checked there was no way to adjust levels in Mainconcept. This is key because DG does not require bars and tone at the head of each clip, so the levels need to be dead on from the start. Has Mainconcept added handles to adjust gamma/contrast/saturation/brightness? Their support group once emailed me and said they had plans to do so, so if they have that’s great.

Does your material start out as lower field first or upper?
This material is very clean, it originated on 35mm film and has been color corrected on a Philips Spirit telecine, and there are no effects. It’s one of the nicest looking spots I’ve done and all the levels are in spec. At this point I’m not even getting past the automated “Ingest Failure” message, the rejection has something to do with the file format or fields. I’m sure we’ll move on to audio and video levels if I can get a file to ingest into their system properly.
Here is the description they gave of the error message when I asked for more detail:
“This file showed 2 errors:
eof on input file (Typically no SEQUENCE_END_CODE found)
File does not contain interlaced frames.”Thanks for your help-
