I’ve tried dual layer but the speed is a killer. Also, recorded optical media is not necessarily a great long term solution. Disks can become unreadable over time, although it happens rarely and usually takes a long time for one to fail.
For now I’m using pairs of hard drives, the little Lacie Porsche ones that cost about $100 for 250 Gigs on newegg. yes, a little scary counting on something with moving parts for an archive, but I figure if there are two of them, stored separately, I should be OK. They’re about the size of a BetaSP tape and stack nicely.
Later this year we plan to purchase a DVCProHD VTR and at that point I’ll archive to tape. The irony is obvious, but tape is cheap. I’m working on a way to archive to tape and still maintain the original timecode from the P2 clips.

A really obvious question, but…are the files themselves duplicates, or do you actually have two different media files with the same name? I’ve only seen this happen a couple of times and for me it was when a P2 card was copied directly to a drive, and also copied to a P2 store which was later copied to that same drive. So whatever files were on the card were also on the P2 store, and ended up on the hard drive twice but in separate folders. If the identically named files are the same size then something like this has probably happened.
Sorry if this line of thinking is irrelevant to your situation but it’s the only thing in my experience that would cause what you describe.
In my case, I was still able to import both sets of files into Final Cut Pro, verify that they were indeed duplicates, and delete one of each pair.

I also have this problem on a dual 2.7 machine. My solution was to buy a new Mac Pro. Just kidding, since I needed to do that anyway, but it did fix the problem. With the old machine it seems there are several strange “features” like this, and I plan to reinstall the OS to try to fix it.
So now I’m on to the Mac Pro and new and different “features” that need to be eliminated.

Well yes a Discreet type color corrector plugin would be nice, but then you’d still have to render in Final Cut which takes us back to the problems of 10 bit renders.

For 10 bit finishing, I’ve all but given up on Final Cut Pro as a color correction solution, or for anything that requires renders before output in 10 bit sequences, because of ongoing problems with 10 bit renders in FCP. I export these types of projects using Automatic Duck, use After Effects or Combustion for color correction and effects, render as 10 bit and just use FCP for realtime playback. Fortunately the only projects I finish in 10 bit are commercials that originate on 35mm film; 8 bit is sufficient for everything else.
Let’s hope this is fixed soon, but it’s been a problem for quite a while so I’m not counting on it.

I agree that Apple is only in the software business to sell computers. I agree that they don’t listen to customers as much as a true software company would. And I agree that there are things broken in FCP that will probably always be broken (like source TC sorted EDL exports for instance) because they affect very few users.
But broken timecode management used to be much worse in FCP. Now there’s a (glacially slow) method for dealing with it, but it’s something at least. Media management used to be much worse as well, and it’s improved if still very weak compared to competitors. Features like this that affect a lot of users are things they have to improve if they want to stay in the game long term. I choose to be optimistic, even where Apple’s concerned.

I don’t believe this is true. Apple has improved FCP’s functions related to timecode breaks over the last few versions, it’s just that they’re still far from being as good as Avid’s. It would be great if 50-60 people told them this was an important issue…especially with Adobe stepping up to the plate with Premiere Pro for Mac, Apple is going to have to stay on top of user feedback to stay competitive.

I only get slightly better speeds than that when using an external firewire 800 RAID 0 on a Powerbook with PCMCIA, so it may not be just the drive speed limiting the transfer times.
