The fact that Kona cards work just fine with FCP 5 means that list is not an exhaustive one…Blackmagic cards were not “qualified” for a couple of versions and now they’re making a big deal that they are qualified. Not really sure how a company maintains its qualification status with Apple – it may have to do with whether Apple has someone to devote to running it through its paces with each new version of FCP, and maybe the priority in the Apple/AJA relationship has been the new IOHD rather than requalifying products that already work. Just a guess, and an uninformed one.

So I guess this means the IO forum will really come alive again. Any word on whether the Kona 3 firmware can be upgraded to “imbed” the ProRes 4:2:2 codec as on the IO HD or is that even necessary? Maybe just a driver upgrade instead?

So I did output to DBeta using the Kona-3 to do the pulldown, however there were some strange issues with the pulldown it created. Main problem was that I had split one clip into two pieces, the second one blurred, and put a dissolve between the two clips to transition the blur in. This created a weird shift when pulldown was added on output. I was able to fix it by “unsplitting” the clip, adding a blur filter and keyframing the transition rather than using the dissolve and the problem went away. 24p did not show the issue until pulldown was added.
So overall, success with the Kona, just have to keep an eye on the pulldown it creates.

I spoke with AJA support last week and they recommended NOT updating to 10.4.9 as there are some unsolved issues right now. Apparently you’ve found one of them.

They should also expect future releases of the Mac OS to create similar problems…ask any third party vendor that makes hardware for the Mac platform.

Yes, I forgot to point out that sometimes when we build DVDs for projection at large events, we work in 24 fps since the projectors look a lot better when they don’t have to deal with fields, especially when graphics are involved.
