At this point I need to be able to edit up to 8 bit HDCam uncompressed, and I already have the S2VR 5 Drive unit, which has worked so far at least for capturing some of this footage. I have had a few strange issues with it not appearing on restarts, and then if I shut down, turn off the S2VR and then start up the Mac, it shows up again. This thread has raised a red flag though, and if there’s some issue with these units I really need to know. Would you avoid this for a primary drive system in a high-end FCP suite?

So Shane and Walter,
You agree that the S2VR 5 drive unit is pretty solid as a standalone, but not the newer CalDigit products labeled as “HD?” If a 5-drive S2VR is likely to have issues, I need to start looking for something else pronto.

Yes, it’s a major improvement. Yes I will buy upgrades for all three of my licenses of FCP. Color alone is worth the price. BUT –
The problem is that all these separate apps have to work together the same way from one version to the next. I’ve been burned several times by trying to migrate an old project from version 4.5 to version 5.x only to have FCP deal with various elements (Motion elements, Soundtrack projects, etc.) in a different way, causing the project to go haywire and requiring a lot of work to get things back in order. This is the main problem of not having some of these features built-in. If FCP gets an update and the other “integrated” apps do not, keep a lookout for problems like this.

Hi Walter-
Anything specific the octo machine did better than what you have now, or just an overall speed boost? Saw some tests last week that indicated it might not have the speed you’d expect because of a memory speed bottleneck. But firsthand accounts are what really matter, so…what do you think?

What about Kona HD cards – how do they deal with the ProRes codec?
