What? Your eyes and brain can’t pick up that 6 frame per second difference? 😉
Well… not to touch off the never ending debate of 24 vs. 30 fps debate… but, you seemed have found the obvious when it comes to the “film” look.
IMO, The film look is less about the frame rate and more about the color saturation and DOF focus. It’s about lighting and camera moves… and, much less about frame rate. Frame rate for film was created at a 24 fps to save on film useage… Less film is used when you shooting at 24fps than 30fps… and, back in the old days this was a significant savings. However, in todays digital world… the fps is less of an issue.
Sooo… what’s the deal? Well… the deal is that the “film” look is not so much about frame rate as it is about the overall feel of the image in terms of color, focus, lighting, etc.
All that being said… I am sure some will disagree, but in IMHO… frame rate is over rated. In fact, to prove my point at one time, I actually claimed my 30 fps video was shot at 24 and not one person could tell it actually wasn’t. However, if I took that same video and removed the extensive color correction and DOF changes out… well, instantly those who thought is was shot at 24 would say it was shot at 30fps. IMO, the average veiwer can not pick up a 6 fps difference… however, I do believe it is possible for an experienced film editor to (just maybe) pick up on this difference (assuming that is the only change you make to the film).

Any editing software can do this… with AE it may actually be more difficult… don’t really know since I would try this effect with AE.
That being said, the method used with either AE or Editing software would be the same…
First you need a alph channel clip of drips.
Use the drip/clip as an alpha matte for the mask… and, then place the mask layer in a fashion that reveals the background layer. Exactly how I have done this in the past is not fresh on my mind and I’m not able to access my editing computer (traveling) to give you specifics.
But, rest assured it is not difficult to do and requires no special filter or method to create… you just have to fiddle with the masking layer relative to the foreground layer and background layer.
On the otherhand, if you do not know how to use matts and masks… then, this little project could be become a major headache… I know, the first time I did this some time ago… I almost pulled my hair out trying to figure out something that turned out to be very simple.

Don’t know since I don’t use an n wire HD system…
However, I currently use about 6 ext. HD’s and 4 internal HD type storage system to edit with… and, the last time I had some work done on my computer… my computer guy said I should look into the wireless HD system because it would be faster. I don’t know it that is true or not (or… he just wanted to sell me a wireless system)… but, according to my computer guy it would be faster than the standard 7200 ext. HD that I currently use.

Assuming you are referencing a Windows OS…
The external HD will only slow you down if the rate of data being sent to is is faster than the HD can process…
This means if you have a slow system then the bit rate to the HD will be slow and a slow HD will be… well,… slow.
On the otherhand, if your laptop is fast and your HD is fast… then the process will not be slowed down enough to be noticeable.
It is more of a matching of data transfer rate between the external HD and your laptop that generate the smoothest editing.
In my experience, the fact that you are using two seperate channels to process data (i.e., the computers HD and the external HD’s channels) the slow down caused by a external HD is not noticeable if your mobo is reasonably new (specially if it has at least 2-3 Gigs of RAM) and a dual processor or faster – or, as some would say… the laptop is expensive. For High Def Video… the min. required CPU processor speed is about 2.6 2X32 (dual processor), a GPU that has ram of about 512 and 2 Gigs of Ram with low latency values.

…Mac or PC? …AE version?
I had a similar problem some time ago with my PC… if memory is correct… it was with AE’s 6.5 version and the cause was determined to be the video card (…which was waaay overdue for an upgrade). The solution was upgrading my entire PC (incl. my video card) and coincidently 7.0 came out and I upgraded as well.

As for bars… I don’t see any bars… but, I do see some glows/shines that extend out a very small amount. Most likely, this “bars” effect was made by Shine by Trapcode.

I don’t know of a single tutorial that would show a complete explanation for creating this type of project… however, there are many basic tutorials that describe how to do most effects that were used in your example… In fact, it is less of an “effect” and consists mostly of various and numerous techniques using camera movements, masks and layers (…probably linked to numerous nulls as well).
In fact, I would be more likely to use an editing software to create most of this video. Most of the various effects and techniques used could be more easily created with any professional level editing software.
The need or use of a compositing software such as After Effects is not necessary for most of what is created in your video example and could actually be more difficult to achieve… of course , whether or not this is true depends upon whether or not you have more experience with an editing software or a compositing software and the capabability your editing software.

Thanks… that’s it… except I found that it sometimes (for what ever reason) doesn’t work and gives a “First select an object, then choose this command”… so, I have to go to the text part of the track and select the objects.
