But re nr2: of course you can offline in SD 25p and online in HD 25p.

14:1 indeed is much smaller than even DNxHD36. But with the current cost of storage, I fail to see the point. Offlining in HD gives you the benefit of being able to screen your cutting copy in HD.

In the Timeline, to the bottom left, there is a hamburger menu. In it, there is an option labeled “Show tracks”. It should bring up a menu of all tracks that are visible in the timeline. EC1 is checked by defuault in film type projects. You can simply uncheck it.

Apparently, the option is not present in the Snow Leopard version of QT. Found a solution here:

Open a Terminal window and enter the following, followed by the return key:

qtdefaults write LegacyCodecsEnabled yes

You should see the response:

Legacy encoders have been enabled.

They rid of the QT preference pane in 10.6, so this is the back door method to achieve the same end.

This worked for me on 10.6.3.

You’ll have to turn on “legacy codecs” in your Quicktime Player settings (Edit->Preferences->Quicktime->Advanced).

Consolidating clips implies you leave the clips in their original codec. Transcoding clips means you copy into a different codec.

If you transcode or consolidate a sequence, the used elements in the sequence (plus adjustable handles) will be copied (consolidated) or transcoded.

Really fast systems (HP Z800/Nehalem Mac) can play it back in yellow/green, rather than yellow/yellow mode. My XW8600 2xQC 3.00 seems to manage that as well.

The retail version of Avid MC comes with Avid FX (and Sorensen, and BCC, and some more), which is basically BorisFX, which may be a little like Motion.

The educational version does not come with Avid FX (and the rest of the 3rd party package), but you can purchase it seperately.

The best thing about the Academic version of MC is that it comes with 4 years of free upgrades (as long as you qualify for the Academic license, that is).

Also, MC has a 30-day free trial version. You can check it out for a full month, then decide if you’d like to own it for that very low student price.

If I were a student, I would not hesitate for one second.
