Audiosuite Limiter Plug-in Suggestions or Quick-tut
Hello,
I am doing a final audio mix in Media Composer 3.0. There is no option for additional post-audio, and I don’t have Protools.
My standard work flow is as follows:
-manually balance my clips using clip gain,
-using Audiosuite, apply a compressor/limiter effect to individual clips when needed
-mixdown audio for final printsUsing the compressor/limiter:
After manual balancing, none of my clips hit 0, and only my vocal tracks are (occasionally) peaking above -8.
I like the Dyn 3 3rd party plug-in that came free with something somewhere once, and I use it with a self-taught, rudimentary understanding.
I set my threshold around -30 (depending on the clip), give it a nice knee, keep the ratio between 3:1 and 5:1. I like to keep my attack at 10 ms, sometimes I put it at 5 ms if the vocals are fast and poppy, and I leave my release at 80 ms (or 100 ms if I shorten my attack). I apply a gain if necessary to boost my newly compressed audio up to between -14 and -8.
At this point i’m mostly happy, but i’ve still got the occasional audio pop rising above -8.
I don’t want to go through and keyframe out every pop, and when I try shortening the attack on some of the poppy clips, it sounds horrible. My Questions:
1) Can anyone recommend a mastering limiter effect with really basic controls, which I can apply to my final mix-down? I’m looking for something that lets me set a wall, and lets me set it by entering a value, not adjusting knobs. In other words, I want to tell the effect “My wall is -8 db” and then render. I’ve heard limiters with interfaces like this exist, but search engineing yields poor results.2) Alternatively, can someone break-down the relationship between typical compressor and limiter controls for me? I understand my threshold is setting the level at which audio is affected, and I understand that the higher the ratio the harder the compressor works, but there must be a way to calculate (at least approximately) what level i’m limiting a given clip too… or is this wishful thinking?
I need more knowledge.
Thanks for your time and energy,
Bacon
