You only need to retype ‘IgnoreQTRate True’ if you plan on importing something. After import, it’s just media like any other.

Caveat: the QT file you import cannot have any sound, or IgnoreQTRate will NOT work.

Depends on what type of footage it is. If this is something like P2 or XDCAM, which Avid natively deals with, it should be less of a problem. Stuff like ProRes or H264 (let alone R3D) require a fast system to handle the AMA pipeline.
In general, for longform, editing from AMA is not recommended. It is very easy and pretty fast to OPEN the files through AMA, then Transcode or Consolidate them into the system (whereby the Avid will create fresh MXF Avid media).
This will give you a more responsive system and a more robust media management. For longform, my strong recommendation would be to take that route.

Install the AMA plugin (it’s not installed by default anymore). I think that is why AMA is looking at the QT’s.

You’re not being smart. Avid clearly and explicitly states what configurations and OS-es are qualified. With a major OS upgrade, like from Snow Leopard to Lion, you should not go for it if you have ‘heavy’ software like MC running on it. Especially not in the first week that the OS has been released.

MC 5.5 won’t run on Lion either, by the way. Avid explicitly warns against it.

Avid have been and are testing Lion. They have been testing with pre-release versions. Bu they need to do their final testing with the release version of Lion, which they have had for just a week now. They need to test thoroughly in order to make sure that everyone knows it is safe to enter those waters.

Apparently, you feel things should just magically work out of the blue, based on nothing. It’s hard for me to even type a serious answer to that attitude.

Current versions of MC don’t run on Lion. Old versions (like 5.0) may never. Oftentimes, Avid will issue updates for older versions (quite recently, a few updates for 4.x were issued). However, based on past experiences, and the fact that there are currently issues with MC and Lion, I would not count on it.

So no one is forcing you to pay 149 bucks. Even if you do, it likely won’t work on Lion. The 149 bucks do get you some minor additional features, though.

If you insist on staying with the latest OS, create two partitions, one to run Avid on, keeping it on a clean, stable, supported version; then on the other partition you can install anything at any time, with cool Mail and all.

I label the MXF files by shooting day. So picture for day #1 is 101, sound for day #1 is 201, etc. Easier to separate sound and picture media too.

And even boxes like the Canopus ones can play back 23.97 as 29.97, AFAIK. So maybe they’re asking for something they don’t need.

Also, I don’t think the frame rate of the AAF matters. 48KHz Audio is 48KHz audio, no matter the master TC counter you run.

I did a film last year where the TK house provide me with Avid mediafiles (DNx36) and Avid bins. I copied the files onto Unity partitions.
I think that Consolidate will do a checksum copy, and a regular finder copy is just a regular copy. So Consolidating might be the safest way to go.

I was wrong about one thing: the store does let you fill in your EU VAT number, so I think you can apply for 0% VAT that way, automatically. However, there’s no telling how much VAT is charged until checkout.

No the Avid store (which is operated by Arvato). For Holland, that appears to be a German store, not sure about other EU countries.
As an intracommunitairy supply (the Arvato store being in one EU country and you in another EU country), provided you are VAT-registered, they can supply at 0% VAT. I think I just sent them an email with my VAT number and asked them to refund it (I had already paid with credit card upon placing the order), which they did.

I’ve notified Avid that it is a weird system. An international EU store, selling professional products to business professionals, should have ex-VAT pricing on their website, and charge no VAT on intracommunitary supplies. Their webstore should let you fill in your EU VAT number. At the very least they should state much clearer that VAT is included (and which rate).
