I’ve occasionally used my Black MacBook (2.16) to do some mobile editing on large projects. MC 3.x. Ran fine. However, capturing is another story, I didn’t try that. You should be fine capturing over FireWire to the internal drive, or Mojo to the internal drive, but since the Mojo requires it is the only device on the bus, you cannot have any external drives attached as well.
Also: at the time, Snow Leopard has not (yet) been qualified to run Avid. Some folks are doing it anyway, check the Avid Community Forums, I hear some mixed results, but in general it seems OK. -

Do you still qualify for the Academic version? You’re not allowed to use it commercially, per the EULA. That said, if you’re still a student, and you want to get to Academic 3.5, I read on the Avid Forums that there is an upgrade path for you. See https://community.avid.com/forums/t/75062.aspx. From what I read, for 124 USD you get the new version, plus a year of Academic Assurance.
On a sidenote, I understand your frustration, but in this day and age of ever evolving and innovating workflows, a year is like a lifetime.

No, it’s the same. Except that the MXF folders have subfolders (named “1” “2” “3” on local storage). You can simply add such a (numbered) subfolder and toss your media in there. It’s wise to keep the file count per folder under 5000, some say 2500.

DigiBeta is slightly more compressed than 2:1.
What happens is that the 2:1 footage is played back (decompressed) over SDI into the DigiBeta deck, which in turn compresses it with its own proprietary codec. So yes, compared to the original, compression is applied twice. -

As far as I can tell, you have a pretty decent machine, and it’s on the list, except for the graphics card. That does not mean it’s going to be a problem, especially since your card is 512MB, chances are it will run just fine. The one officially supported for your machine would be the GeForce 7300 GT (which is 256MB). If it turns out your graphics card is giving you trouble, then you could put that one in (I don’t think it sells for more than 70 bucks now).If there is indeed going to be a new release within weeks, and you buy MC 3.5 today, it would be very, very likely that you will fall in the usual “grace period”, meaning that this new version would be free of cost for you.
The thing that you should worry about as well is the right OS/Quicktime combination. For 3.5.4, Avid wants you to be on 10.5.5., 10.5.6 or 10.5.7. 10.5.8 has not (yet?) been qualified. Might work, might not. QT should be 7.5.5 or 7.6 (not 7.6.2 for instance). Again, using different versions than specified might work, might not work. If you’re running different apps, you might want to create a separate drive or partition running the right combo of Avid, OSX and Quicktime.
But here’s the even better news for both your questions: you can download a 14-day free, fully functional trial version on the Avid website. This will allow you to install and try the software on your machine, and test if it works out. I’m betting it will, but why not take the free test ride?

You mention a picture, but I don’t see any.
Are you on 3.5 or on another 3.x release? On non-3.5 revisions, open the console and type “fsp locked”. See if that helps.

If the media is there and the sequence is there, you could set Bin Display to display the clips used in the sequence, then add (fake) tapenames to those, and assign the same tapenames to the imported media you find in the Media Tool. Then relink. Be sure to not create duplicate tape/timecode, since then you will get false relinks.
