If the tapes were shot in 1080i on another camera your JVC camera likely won’t play them back since it’s a 720P format. If they were shot on the JVC camera, then they’re 720P not 1080i.

Are you using compressor or quiktime conversion. My render times with quicktime conversion in either ProRes HQ or DVCPROHD 1080i/29.97 are pretty quick. 1 minute of HD ProRes HQ took me about 4 minutes using quick time conversion with best quality settings.

This is on a dual quad core, but my DP 2ghz also does it pretty fast.

I loaded the updates and see a little increase in speed, but when I just tried to render a 90 minute timeline in ProRes, that was mostly rendered except for about a dozen 5 second Motion titles, the program crashed.

I’ve been getting a lot of crashes when I try to render. Of course have sent reports to Apple, but who knows where they go?

This is a 3 camera multiclip sequence, & when I finished editing yesterday I tried to put dissolves in by dragging the timeline to the overwrite with transition window in the canvas and it would repeatedly crash. The only way I could get it to work was by doing 20 or so clips at a time & I have 10 gigs of Ram, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

It seems if you render in small bits it works, but who needs that?

Kona 3 is definitely a great conversion. If you happen to have FC studio 2 and an Intel machine the ProRes 422 HQ is awesome!

If you’re editing on Kona two or LH, then do the conversion in the deck as you digitize and edit in 1080i. I believe it’s menu item 632, 720P in/1080i out.

On one shot the pixelization happens in the same place, in others that’s not the case. This shot, however, is the exact same shot that was used in the original show, with no problems. We also had several occassions in a 5 minute clip of a similar problem with different tapes. These problems do not show when we play the clip on the timeline, nor in the viewer. It also happens whether the clip is captured at ProRes HQ or DVCPROHD 1080i/29.97. No problems in the edit system only when recorded to tape with the 1200.

I question the heads, since this particular shot may be challenging their performance whereas others are not and the shot as well as others were edited into the original show with no issues.

I’m trying to get another deck tomorrow to see if the same problem occurs. I’ll let you know.

Thanks Walt for the clarification. It does seem a little silly that Panasonic put RS422 contol in the 1200 and you can’t or at least I couldn’t use it to control the deck for striping or edit to tape functions.

I found the menu item and set the time code.

I now have found another issue. when I lay my project to tape there is pixilating in two or three of the shots when viewed on the recorded tape. They’re not in the timeline and they’re not in the original show. I redigitized the shots from the field cassette and still have the same problem. Could this be an issue caused by worn heads?

    Thx…jw

I was attempting to stripe it the same as I would with our HD 150 deck and RS 422 control, but using firewire. However when you select the stripe icon it gives the option of using the settings you have, when you click OK it doesn’t give the otion of where you want to start the time cod, but immediately starts recording black at whatever TC the deck is set at.

I finally just reset the timecode on the deck to 58:00:00 and then went through the normal striping routine and it started at 58:00:00…Not elegant, but it worked.

I’m also getting breakup in the composite video out “2” which is the super connection and getting nothing from composite video out “1” & I set the menu item to composite from component.

Any suggestions? I’ll be very happy when i get my 150 back.

Kona 3 from AJA is my recommendation along with a new Dual Quad Core Mac. We’ve had extensive experience with AJA (all good) and considerable experience with Black Magic (less than stellar and their tech support is very, very understaffed).

We’ve released about 70 hours of HD programming, 50 or so hours all cut on Kona cards and again…their tech support is the best!!

    Good luck…jw

The problem returned, so I called Kona again and Steve worked out that it may be a Raid problem, so we checked the Raid Admin and sure enough we had a couple of setting that needed changing and that solved the problem.

The tech support at Kona is the best I’ve seen anywhere! if you looked up Tech Support in the dictionary their picture should be there!

    thx…jw
