Not being funny, but why would you want this? If you have realtime output to a TV monitor why would you want another monitor window on your pc doing the same thing?

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Have a look through the Creative Cow tutorials..lots there.

Andrew Kramer recently did one on creating 3D text reflection, which worked well.

    Hi Luke/All,

Well I’vew not had much luck getting any info about QT/AE/BMD compatibility…Tell me, can you remember if DeckLink EVER worked with AE 5.5?

I’ve tried installing QT 7.0 and 6.5 instead, but it still doesn’t seem to work. QT 7.0 upwards does work with Combustion 3 however, but not AE 5.5.

I won’t waste my time going through as many versions of QT as I can find if I know 5.5 just won’t work with the DeckLink.

Anyone else had success with any of those configs?

I figured that was it, but never really delved..So in what situation would you use ‘none’? I often use uncompressed AVI when outputting from AE to go into an NLE (on a PC) or targa sequence if going to the clipstation, then the editbox.

What are better, more file size sympathetic alternatives that keep the footage essentially ‘uncompressed’ quality wise then?

    Thanks.

That is very odd! So currently you’re clicking and holding on the footage file in the project window and dragging it to the button at the bottom of the comp window that is inbetween the folder icon and the trash icon?

That should open a comp based on the footage size and ratio. Strange. So have you currently got black either side of the footage in the comp window? If so, do a test and open a new solid layer that green or something contrasting to the footage…can you see that instead of where the black pillar box lines were?

Good one! I usually just flatten, but that will come in very handy… ta.

You need to set the aspect ratio and size of your composition to match the footage BEFORE you add the footage to the comp. AFX should interpret your footage correctly on import, however if it doesn’t I THINK you can re-interpret it and tell it what it should be. Can’t be sure, I’ve not got AFX on this workstation.

I know AFX 5.5 has problem correctly interpreting footage, especially PSDs. It won’t recognise that a PSD has non-square pixels. I think only 6.0 and above do.

But then only suckers like me are still using 5.5! Roll on next month and AE7!

When you say 3 or 4 ‘commands’..what do you mean? I’m always trying to find quicker ways to do stuff!

off topic – have you noticed how the action & title safe guides in PS are not right? I rarely use them as I have my own file template set up for UK 16:9 broadcast…but I was doing a non-broadcast job yesterday and was using the title safe preset on a DV PAL widescreen new document (with guides) and noticed the vertical title safe is WELL within the actual legal safe. Bit boring I know, but if it’s something you need, it’s good to know!

  • Yup, definetely not uncompressed AVI that! Unless it’s physically not full screen in size?

When you’ve worked out how to export to a QT movie you could always just winrar the file and set winrar to split into 700mb chunks and spread over a couple of DVD-Rs? The person at the other end just needs to copy all the files into one folder and open part 1 and it will rebuild itself.
