Newbie: Aspect Ratio changes in Timeline
When I drag footage into my timeline, my footage doesn’t retain the correct aspect ratio. My clips’ width are smooshed by 50 pixels, but the height remains the same. I have to “free transform” the width to the original size, which makes the clips lose quality. I don’t see anything in prefrences…Ah! Please Help. Thanks in advance!

You need to set the aspect ratio and size of your composition to match the footage BEFORE you add the footage to the comp. AFX should interpret your footage correctly on import, however if it doesn’t I THINK you can re-interpret it and tell it what it should be. Can’t be sure, I’ve not got AFX on this workstation.
I know AFX 5.5 has problem correctly interpreting footage, especially PSDs. It won’t recognise that a PSD has non-square pixels. I think only 6.0 and above do.
But then only suckers like me are still using 5.5! Roll on next month and AE7!

AS jimmybee said, you should try and match the comp to footage. TRy dragging the footage onto the make new compostion icon at the bottom of the project window. This will ensure that the comp matches the footage.

Thanks for the advice guys. The footage that is being warped is the exact same aspect ratio as the composition. I tried dragging the footage to the new composition icon, but the problem remains the same. I guess I’ll have to eye-ball it and stretch it to the right size. As a side note, when I preview the footage by double clicking on the file in the project window, the footage is the right size?

That is very odd! So currently you’re clicking and holding on the footage file in the project window and dragging it to the button at the bottom of the comp window that is inbetween the folder icon and the trash icon?
That should open a comp based on the footage size and ratio. Strange. So have you currently got black either side of the footage in the comp window? If so, do a test and open a new solid layer that green or something contrasting to the footage…can you see that instead of where the black pillar box lines were?

There is an aspect ration correction that you can activate in the preview window. Is it possible that this is activated and that what you are seeing is this distortion ???

I tried JimmyBees’s advice and I’m still seeing the distortion. Where would this button be that you are talking about?

Ahhh ok. Got it. This might be the problem.
