If you’re on a Dual G5 Nucleo will almost certainly help..

Mark – I have no idea why, I read it somewhere in the archives – apparently the OS hogs some of your RAM to buffer the PCIExpress slots. Since my board is old it doesn’t have any..BONUS?

Not really….just found out my Decklink card only supports upto 3GB RAM on 32-bit Windows anyway, plus I’ve just found out my current 2GB is 4 x 512 sticks, so I’ve got no slots left!

Buying 4GB of new RAM on a PC I’m probably dumping in the next few months seems alot to ask.

Oh well, I’ll just have to troop on and take the tutting over my shoulder from my clients!

I will be getting Nucleo when I get my new machine (2 x quad Xeons with any luck) but in the meantime I’ve only got a single-core P4 3GHz, so Nucleo wouldn’t really make any difference. I’m just trying to optimise this system (cheaply) until we can afford the big boy…

Incidentally – just realized that my motherboard doesn’t support PCI-Express, so does that mean I won’t get this RAM black hole?

Basically I want to know that if I get 4GB RAM I will see a noticable difference in performance of AE with other apps open, over getting 3GB?

    Anymore takers?!?

I apologise, you were totally correct Mylenium! I had must have globally changed them all somehow months ago, but not the ones I use most often hence the confusion. All sorted now!

Ha! That was it, thanks Mike. I think I got confused because most of the folders I regularly use were arrange as I wanted them, but not via Adobe apps. Turns out I’d re-organised some but not applied to all. SAVED!

March 12, 2007 at 2:42 pm in reply to: Fusion & AE?

    Thanks Robert,

I’ve got Combustion 3 and I really can’t get on with the workflow and UI and apart from a couple of features (better roto & tracking + raytracing) it’s not upto AE for what I do anyway. Fusion on the other hand seems to have alot of very powerful 3D capabilities and is fully multithreaded by the sounds of it, meaning you could get an almost Flame-rivalling speed of working.

There’s no doubt it’s very powerful, I just wondered if it could take over AE for more graphics-based work or whether there is a place for both.

    Any other takers?

March 8, 2007 at 11:20 am in reply to: Stills in AE – 15 Frames = 1 hour RENDER !!!

I had something similar to this with huge layers (3500pix +) not so long ago. It was a simple move, a 2D layer and motion blur enabled. If you need the layer so big because it’s zooming back into position you are a bit stuck I think. Otherwise I’d try to crop the layer by rendering it out and pulling it back in or something – so that AE only reads and tries to render the pixels within the frame?

Other than that you could maybe try playing with the ‘region of interest’ function, where you crop a box of just the bit you want to preview..don’t know if it works with final renders but if it doesn’t you could always ave you RAM preview?

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the reply Mylenium, but I have not changed anything to my knowledge..outside of the Adobe apps (and in any other app – word, combustion, etc) my folder structures behave fine. It’s only when opening stuff/saving stuf from WITHIN adobe apps where the problem arises.

It was fine in the CS1 apps and AE 5.5..which just makes me think it’s something written into the latest Adobe software to make you use Bridge?

Has no one else had this problem?

  • Thanks Ken, yes I’m leaning towards ProAni after having played with the demo for a day or so…I just wonder what the hardcore AE users’ choice would be? There’s got to be a good reason PA hasn’t taken as well as Invig, other than one app having been around alot longer…or does there?

I know about Zaxwerks forum – they’re really helpful, but honestly..they’re going to tell me to go for the most expensive one aren’t they 😉

For 1500 I’d upgrade your current PC as much as poss…even if you need a new motherboard, etc. it would still save you a bit to spend on more memory, faster proc, etc. If you’re going for a multiprocessor, you use AE alot and you have
