  • 3GB or 4GB RAM?

I think I need some more RAM (I currently have 2GB) – I’m working on longer Standard-Def AE projects of late and I can’t cache enough of the comp into RAM, I also tend to have Premiere and Photoshop open at the same time and things are getting a bit sluggish…

OK, so I know about the 2GB limit on 32-bit apps (I’m using 32bit XP aswell) and not keen on the 3GB/switch idea for stability issues..though it is tempting..but I want to maximise the RAM I can give to AE and wondered how much difference I am going to see if I raise my total RAM to 3GB or to 4GB?

I’ve heard about this black hole thing and 4GB can sometimes only be seen as 2.75GB on a system…so should I just stick with 3GB?

    Thanks guys.

Have you looked at getting Nucleo ??? It can see all memory that is installed on the machine.

I have the 3GB switch activated on my system. Whilst I have 4GB of ram installed, AE only sees 3GB. I have not seen any stability issues using the switch. I am going to be getting Nucleo very soon.

I will be getting Nucleo when I get my new machine (2 x quad Xeons with any luck) but in the meantime I’ve only got a single-core P4 3GHz, so Nucleo wouldn’t really make any difference. I’m just trying to optimise this system (cheaply) until we can afford the big boy…

Incidentally – just realized that my motherboard doesn’t support PCI-Express, so does that mean I won’t get this RAM black hole?

Basically I want to know that if I get 4GB RAM I will see a noticable difference in performance of AE with other apps open, over getting 3GB?

    Anymore takers?!?

I don’t understand ??? PCIe is for graphics and doesn’t affect ram.

Mark – I have no idea why, I read it somewhere in the archives – apparently the OS hogs some of your RAM to buffer the PCIExpress slots. Since my board is old it doesn’t have any..BONUS?

Not really….just found out my Decklink card only supports upto 3GB RAM on 32-bit Windows anyway, plus I’ve just found out my current 2GB is 4 x 512 sticks, so I’ve got no slots left!

Buying 4GB of new RAM on a PC I’m probably dumping in the next few months seems alot to ask.

Oh well, I’ll just have to troop on and take the tutting over my shoulder from my clients!

AE will only see 4 GB of RAM on a 64 bits machine.
3 GB is max for a 32 bits machine.
