Right-click on the SCALE name in the Inspector, choose RAMP and then adjust the settings in the Behaviors tab.

Either change the comp background color to white or create a white solid at comp size and drag it down the layer stack to the bottom.

MPEG is not a good format for working with — it is for playing back.
Before trying to work with MPEG footage in a comp, try converting it first to a .MOV or a .AVI file. There are a number of utilities available on the web to do this, just do a search for “MPEG TO AVI” or something similar.

A mask has to have a number of fixed vertices — you can’t add or remove any during an animation. If you need 20 points to define the most complex shape, those same 20 points must also define the most simple shape.

Try deleting the preferences file (a .plist file in the current user’s preferences).
Are you trying to install M1 or M2? G5 or Intel system?

The traditional way is to build the text in Motion as 2 objects, one right-aligned (for the left column) and the other left-aligned (for the right column).
Next both elements in a new layer and line them up so they match with the correct text on each line, then animate the roll by animating the master layer.

Motion uses premulitplied with black as the default alpha channel interpretation.

That is correct. Photoshop is a destructive editing environment.
Many people are switching to After Effects (even for still image work) because it is non-destructive editing. You can go back and change pretty much anything at any time if you (or the client) change your minds.

Maybe it’s because they are different programs that were developed by different teams of programmers at different times?
The little inconsistencies between programs can drive one nuts!
