Imagine 2 layers each shot separately against green screen:

Layer one: The hero guy runs towards camera
Layer two: A group of 20 guys side by side run towards camera.

Key out the green screen make 100 copies of Layer two set each one a little further back in “Z” space — Move layer one (Hero Guy a little closer than all the others in “Z” space — now we can use the camera in After Effects’ using: zoom + Depth of Field to zoom in on our hero’s layer and focus on him — throwing all the other layers into blurry perfection….

That’s my guess on how I’d try to do this anyway…

May 4, 2009 at 3:14 am in reply to: Wolverine Open Credits effect?? Anyone

Search “Kid Stays in the Picture” and you’ll get lots of results…

here are two useful links — the 1st is a great Andrew Kramer tutorial…

    https://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/virtual_3d_photos/
    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/889762#889764

What was great about the Wolverine freeze frames was a great grungy dirt texture blended into the freeze frames… (as its own 3d layer)
(also available from Andrew Kramer Grunge effects) or you could make your own grunge using Fractal noise…

May 4, 2009 at 3:03 am in reply to: particular -custom movie particle qn

From Particulars manual (which you can find by presssing the “options” link inside particular then pressing the “help” button inside options:

    ****
The Split Clip modes splits the custom layer into a number of clips given by the parameter “Number of Clips”. For example, if the custom layer is 30 frames and “Number of Clips” is set to three, that means it will be split into three 10 frame clips. This is useful for creating a set of animated particles.

Split Clip – Play Once Randomly select one of the clips and play the clip once.
Split Clip – Loop Randomly select one of the clips and play the clip looping.
Split Clip – Stretch Randomly select one of the clips and time-stretch it to fit the particle life.

    ****

So if you have a clip 150 frames long divided as follows: 1st a triangle going slow for 50 frames then another triangle rotating medium for 50 frames then a third triangle rotating fast for 50 frames then choose “split clip loop” and then set “# of clips” to 3 — Particular will emit three different triangles each rotating three different speeds — more triangles — more # of clips and you can have 20 different speeds if you like (I think?)

    Does this help??

April 19, 2009 at 4:02 pm in reply to: Turning two points into position, rotation and scale

The two points of tracking data didn’t come from one pass of motion tracker — they were averaged and adjusted using Mackdadd’s killer TrackViz scripts.

    Info here:
    https://www.vfxtalk.com/forum/trackerviz-cs3-t16031.html

    Script Available here:
    https://www.mackdadd.com/CG/trackerviz/TrackerViz_v2-1.zip

But there is a way to paste the two tracking points back onto the Motion Tracker’s attach points, I’m just missing something somehow… I’ve pasted the two points to a motion tracker’s two attach points and the tracking is good but the rotation is cattywhumpus…

I found the problem — when I unchecked “Use System Color Picker” in the AE general Preferences the interactive AE color picker palette (or whatever it’s called?!) came up. Now as i drag around the colors Keylight shows me an updated de-spill!

    Yayyyyyy!

How about trying “Roughen Edges” — there are quite a few options within that plugin…

If you toggle the Layer Name/Source Name found in the column heading in the Timeline panel, you’ll toggle between the source name and the name you have given that layer. If you haven’t named the layer, it will just toggle the brackets on and off…
