My first questions is what version of Final Cut are you using? The most recent version, I think it’s 5.1.4, has P2 operability. Once your MXF files are on the hard drive- go to File> Import> Panasonic P2. Locate your MXF files and continue the import process. This will import the files as Quicktimes which are viewable and editable within Final Cut.

    I hope this helps.

Oh, and make sure you have the proper P2 drivers loaded.

First thing I would suggest is upgrade your FCP to 5.1.2. Let us know if that doesn’t help.

In other words your timeline setup has to match what you are digitizing.

Duel Systems is working on a PCMCIA to Expresscard adaptor. It should be out in the next couple of months. It will be capable of reading P2.

    felipe,
I have the Century 1.6. It does a good job. You are really restricted on how wide you can pull out if you are following any action…but that’s the case with any telephoto I believe. Also, don’t expect the 1.6 to bring you remarkably close to your far off subjects. If it had been available I would have gone with the 2.0. Also the telephoto is a big chink of glass… well made… its real quality.

October 6, 2006 at 8:58 pm in reply to: What tripod do you use with your HVX?

Vinten carbon fiber legs with a Vinten Vision 8 head. I seldom use the camera by itself so this isn’t overkill. Typically I have a Zacuto baseplate, rods, Petroff follow focus, Petrof matte box, another set of rods coming off the back holding the Zacuto battery plate with a Noga arm supporting a Marshall 7″ monitor. All together it’s probably in the neighbor hood of 15 pounds of gear… hence the need for the heftier head.

    Will,
I’m running what you describe and have great success. I am running the AJA Io via firewire… and using the SeriTek expresscard adaptor to run G-Technology’s G-Sata for storage.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hey jason,
Just a heads up. Don’t assume that all festivals will accept DigiBeta. Some still take beta SP, VHS and DVD. Some are even accepting HDCAM. Because of that I would suggest finishing in the highest format possible based on your budget. Also, if the BluRay specs indicate 1080p go ahead and shoot and edit in 1080p. That way you acquire the highest possible image you can with your camera. You can always go back and down convert later if needed. Personally, I would rather down convert than up convert any day.

By the way, I’m editing P2 video on a MacBook Pro with a G-Sata external drive. I’m using the ESata/Expresscard34 adapter from SeriTek. Everything works great. It is probably a little bit faster than going the Firewire 800 route.

Thanks Jeremy. Took a little deeper digging into the manual than I would have expected.
