  • can’t import/convert mxf files for FCP

I’ve copied my mxf files from a FS-100 drive to an external hard disk but am unable to flip these files into anything usable for Final Cut Pro. When I try to use the trial versions of MXFConverter or P2 Log, they won’t import/convert these files regardless whether I try to select them from the copied version or from the original files on the FS-100. When I try to import from within Final Cut, it tells me there is no P2 card to select and will not allow me to select these files. I wonder if my old machine has something to do with it. If so, are there any workarounds on a tight schedule? I’m trying to get a project out by tomorrow afternoon.

    1Ghz G4 PowerBook, 512 SDRAM
    Running OS 10.3.9
    FCP 5.0.4

    Thanks for any suggestions.

First thing I would suggest is upgrade your FCP to 5.1.2. Let us know if that doesn’t help.

Oh, and make sure you have the proper P2 drivers loaded.

Did you run the “Organize P2” function from the utilities menu on the Firestore?

Thanks Jim and Rumpy for your thoughts.

i tried importing into FCP 5.1. While this time the “Import P2” feature acknowledged that the
mxf files did exist, it said something to the effect
of: it did not recognize the organization of the
    contents.

as far as running the organization feature on the
firestore: i did not. i followed the FS manual’s
simple instructions for transferring files to a Mac
computer which essentially amounted to a drag and drop
explanation. however, i believe the manual covered
this feature in the Windows section and I wondered at
the time if I should run the Organization command just
    in case.

now i wonder if i don’t have any folders labeled
“contents”, “video”, “audio” etc. because of this. my folders almost entirely consist of plain mxf files, completely uncategorized.

You must organize p2 BEFORE trying to import.

    This isn’t a Mac/PC issue; it’s required for both

Yes, what David said. You must always run the organize P2 utility before copying or importing the files. You also MUST reformat the firestore before recording any additional material. Do not record anything after you run the organize utility until after you have copied/imported the footage and reformatted the firestore.

thanks for your response. i guess my question is now, what do i do from here? the firestore was rented and is long gone on other shoots. and i’m left with an entire shoot’s worth of mxf files.
my first instinct is to rent another FS-100 and try to copy my files now on the external hard drive to the the disk recorder, run the “organize” feature and THEN try to import it into final cut.

I’m wondering if you found a solution to this issue. I have done the same thing and cant imprt my files into FCP anymore. What now?

What software is available to be able to view MXF files that were taken from P-2 card. I would like to see both video and audio in sync and see time code? I’m using a Windows Media player program in a PC and I’m only able to see Video or audio but not both together in the field.
I also need some software that will allow me to import these files into my Final cut 5.01 program to be edited.
