OK I tried to aquire in the DVCPro 100 codec and the video glitches when ingested from an HDx card (it’s fine uncompressed). I will call support and see what’s up.

If you need to upconvert it can be an issue as the HDe doesn’t up convert SD to HD, 720 to 1080, etc. It will down convert and the hardware can be used for FCP in a dual boot configuration. It will do something else the HDx card won’t Aquire (not digitize anymore) DVCPro HD codec. The HDx will only aquire uncompressed HD which can be a space and bandwidth issue.

Media 100 HD ver. 11.5 is the version (Producer or HD) that works with P2 and even then not all of the codecs (no 720 or 480 progressive) The camera you want for run and gun would probably be one of the more expensive models as they will handle more like the camcorder you are used to. News in SD works pretty well with these cards but for HD the workflow is more like film. Make sure you have plenty of storage and back-up the files in more than one place. Working with the metadata is an issue if you need to find shots later as its the only way to find anything. No more tape on the shelf means you need to think more in IT terms with NAS storage SAN editing drives and Blueray DVD, DLT or LTO backup. We took the plunge and are still adjusting to the workflow ourselves.

When you start a new project you must check your project settings/media settings as it will most likely default to media100 i 80kb or 1080i HD. You will have to batch reacquire at a higher res. It would be nice if it would remember where you left it on your last project but since it allows you to mix resolutions in the time line it’s probably something we have to live with. This little problem catches us all from time to time usually when you can least afford to take the time to batch everything.

The main differences between the HDe you have and the hdx cards is that the hdx can up convert sd to hd going in and you will need a d to a converter like a wholer or flying cow to moniter audio. The latest 11.5.1 patch lets you use embedded audio on the sd sdi in and out but not the HDsdi. You will not be able to use the hdx cards in the new macs, as they are only pci x, so as long as your satisfied with your G5 and its a good deal they function pretty much the same as far as Media 100 HD is concerned. The HDe hardware can run FCP if you dual boot on seperate drives or partitions as the drivers are incompatible.
