Thank you Matt. Excellent answer.
For some reason, setting the rate via the slider affects only my timeline, not my trimmer. That’s not a big problem – the JKL method works well.

That solved my problem. I’m using Vegas 9 and was encountering the same drag&drop problem. I unchecked ‘run as administrator’ and now it works. Thanks

#1. Is that a mistake/limitation in the software?
If you set the Project Properties to Match Media Settings, why does it not set the render rate = the source rate?
#2. Alas, the render template given by matching media settings does not allow for customizing the video rate. “Data rate” is ‘grayed out’.
Also, clicking on Configure next to Video format just pops up a blurb ‘about’ the codec – nothing can be configured.
The template is: HDV 720-25p intermediate, using CineForm HDV codec.
(I double-checked that the template was set by Vegas, not by an accident by me. I created a new project, added the video, clicked Render As, and saw the template was NTSC DV, then I set Project Properties to Match Media Settings, and now Render As shows the template above.)

Okay, I’ll accept that the 12 refers to Color Depth, even though Vegas’ Project Media tab displays the Color Depth as 32.
But if the Color Depth did not change between the original and rendered videos (recall that the rendered video is ‘416x304x24‘), then why did the ‘video rate’ jump from 540KBps to 874 KBps? I could see no differences between videos except the jump from ’12’ to ’24’ in the 416x304x__ measures.
What can I do to get the rendered video rate to match the original video rate? (Recall that I set my project properties to “Match Media Settings”.)
Mucho gracias,
Jill (using Vegas Pro 8.0c) -
No, it’s not Color Depth. (Thanks for suggesting it – I should have stated in my original post that that’s not it.)
In the Project Media tab, the Color Depth column is displayed, and it shows 32 for the both the original and rendered video.
P.S. I could find nothing that is set to 12 or 24 in
(a) Project Properties or
(b) the customize template option within “Render As”.When Vegas tells me the video is 416x304x12, what does the 12 represent?

Thanks Mike,
Three months ago I copied the Edit Details ‘sheet’ into a spreadsheet and did various operations (including renaming regions according to a formula, and searching for region names that violated certain ‘rules’), but until you mentioned it despite my ‘exhaustive’ adventures it did not occur to me to copy Edit Details to a spreadsheet to search for my needle-in-a-haystack.
(Also: Yes, in cases where I know how the event name begins, it will be quick to find if I sort by Active Take Name. I have a naming system, but I will use a more intuitive system with my next project.)

Thanks Mike but:
(a) I did mention this under the section “Slow ‘Solutions'”:
– read through Edit Details -> Events?, then Ctrl-G and enter the time in “Edit Details”
(b) I rejected it because
I confirmed we can’t search ‘Edit Details’
Still, your reply does satisfy me that there is no better solution, yet, so I’m not suffering needlessly while a sweet solution awaits my awareness.
Added details (in case anyone else wants to do the above method):
After finding the event in Edit Details, double-click the “Start” column, ctrl-c (copy), alt-0 (zero) (change focus to timeline), ctrl-g (go-to), ctrl-v (paste), enter. -

April 7, 2009 at 2:18 am in reply to: Not Track-Level, Clip/Event-Level Volume Envelopes & Composite-Level Envelopes?I know adding 4 points (and dragging 2) is not a terrible thing, but that takes 10 clicks, not counting the initial adding of the envelope.
I never noticed the “gain is 0 db” arrow method before. Thanks.
The same method works for composite levels: hovering at the top of any video track brings up an “opacity is 100%” [thing] which can be click-dragged down.
Solved x 2, except:
When we do want a volume/composite-level envelope, we should be able to add it to an event, because otherwise:
(a) !!! throughout the track (perhaps 90 minutes or so) there is one more thing that [pops up] when hovered over, i.e. gets in our way!!!
(b) when rendering, I wonder if portions of video that would require [no processing], would now require time-consuming processing. -

April 6, 2009 at 3:14 am in reply to: Vegas to Earphones & MediaPlayer to External Speakers?thanks
i checked out the M-audio Firewire 410, and realized it’s certainly not something I need.
I checked out ipods and found almost all have TV-Out support, as well as up to 120 GB storage. great.
Alternatively, I imagine there ought to be a $20 gadget that I can attach to my laptop via firewire or USB, the only purpose of which is to have another audio out jack, and then I could choose where to send Vegas’ audio output.
Then again, since I sometimes want to take my laptop, but leave Dad entertained, an ipod is the answer.
Thanks, again.
