I have 2 audio out jacks. As caregiver for my dad, I often want to be playing something for him on Windows Media Player while I’m working in Vegas.

I doubt there is a way to specify within Vegas where to send the output, but I’ll ask in case someone knows a way to add that option to Vegas, or any non-Vegas way to do it.

(Perhaps I should address this to my computer manufacturer: HP,
or the audio card [?] maker: RealTek.)

Sure there is. You set this in the Options | Preferences | Audio Device. If the two audio out jacks are from the same audio device you will only be able to play one thing at a time since they are both sent the same signal from your computer. You need two physical audio devices to play two streams at once. I have an M-Audio Firewire 410 interface that I send all of my Vegas audio out and my Windows Media Player and the rest of the beeps from Windows uses the RealTek chip on my motherboard. If all you have is the motherboard audio chip, then you can only play one thing at once.

    Get Dad an iPod. 😉

    thanks

i checked out the M-audio Firewire 410, and realized it’s certainly not something I need.

I checked out ipods and found almost all have TV-Out support, as well as up to 120 GB storage. great.

Alternatively, I imagine there ought to be a $20 gadget that I can attach to my laptop via firewire or USB, the only purpose of which is to have another audio out jack, and then I could choose where to send Vegas’ audio output.

Then again, since I sometimes want to take my laptop, but leave Dad entertained, an ipod is the answer.

    Thanks, again.
