  • Search Timeline for Needle in Haystack – Project Media “Select Timeline Events” – in a 300-event project, I can’t see the “selected” events. Move cursor too or create loop region?

The Project Media window lets me right-click a file and ‘Select Timeline Events’, but it does not move the cursor to the event (or one of the events, if the file has multiple events), and it does not create a loop region – perhaps because there should only be one loop region at a time, and if there are multiple events from that file, Vegas doesn’t know which event we want it to draw our attention to, and it doesn’t want to lead us astray thinking there is only one event.

So how can I find the needle in the haystack?

Shift-L to select the loop region won’t work, because there is no loop region attached to the selected event.

Zoom brings me into the location of the indicator line, not the selection.

Insert -> Time inserts at the location of the indicator line, not the selection.

Shift + Right-Arrow selects an area at the location of the indicator line, not the selection.

If there is a crossfade, the crossfade duration info pops up on the start and/or end of the event – that I can find if I look for it, if it’s there, but if there’s no crossfade, there’s no such flag.

Is there a way to ‘create loop region around next selected event’ or ‘move indicator line [/cursor] to next selected event’?

    BETTER YET:
Is there a way to ‘Select Timeline Events’ which also moves the cursor to the (first) event?

    BEST “WORK-AROUND”:
I could cut the event, and if the event is big enough, be able to see a gap, or turn on auto-ripple, and see where the ripple starts, but if the event is only 5 seconds or so, it’s hard to pinpoint where the change is happening, so I have to ‘iterate’ this process: cut, move the cursor to the rough area of change, zoom in, undo the cut; repeat; repeat.

    SLOW “SOLUTIONS”:
    – zoom in and scroll through the timeline
    – read through Edit Details -> Events?, then Ctrl-G and enter the time in “Edit Details”

    ‘EDIT DETAILS’
I confirmed we can’t search ‘Edit Details’, nor right-click and GoTo from an item in ‘Edit Details’.

    BAD IDEA:
I could temporarily stretch the event(s). I can click ‘insert’ -> video envelope -> event velocity, but I can’t change the velocity without clicking on the event itself, and if I can’t find the event, …. Is there a magical way to ‘stretch selected event(s)’ by keyboard alone?

    Sorry to be so exhausting,
Hoping there’s a simple solution I’ve overlooked – or that VAAST’s Ultimate S or Excalibur or some other 3rd party extension can solve this,
    Little Miss Exhausted.

“So how can I find the needle in the haystack?”

    View – Edit Details.
Select Events in the Show column.
Find the event you’re looking for and note the time in the Start column.
In the bottom right of the timeline, you ‘ll see 3 small boxes that are, from left to right, Cursor Position, Selection End & Selection Length.
Enter the time noted above in the Cursor Position box and your cursor will jump to that spot.

    Thanks Mike but:

    (a) I did mention this under the section “Slow ‘Solutions'”:

    – read through Edit Details -> Events?, then Ctrl-G and enter the time in “Edit Details”

    (b) I rejected it because

I confirmed we can’t search ‘Edit Details’

Still, your reply does satisfy me that there is no better solution, yet, so I’m not suffering needlessly while a sweet solution awaits my awareness.

Added details (in case anyone else wants to do the above method):
After finding the event in Edit Details, double-click the “Start” column, ctrl-c (copy), alt-0 (zero) (change focus to timeline), ctrl-g (go-to), ctrl-v (paste), enter.

Jill, my apologies for missing that part of your question.
I’m certain that you’re aware of the fact that you can do a sort any individual column, in this case Active Take Name.
As long as you know what you’re looking for, you should be able to find it fairly quickly.

One last (even slower) option is, if you have access to Excel or it’s equivalent, to copy the entire list from Vegas and paste it in there to take advantage of it’s search feature.
This is done by going to the top left corner of Edit Details (the square above and left of cell one) and click it.
The whole table should be selected.
    Hit CTRL+C to copy.
Yes, it’s clumsy because you can’t right-click and select “Copy”.
Now do a paste into Excel.
From there you can hide the columns you don’t want to see.

    Thanks Mike,

Three months ago I copied the Edit Details ‘sheet’ into a spreadsheet and did various operations (including renaming regions according to a formula, and searching for region names that violated certain ‘rules’), but until you mentioned it despite my ‘exhaustive’ adventures it did not occur to me to copy Edit Details to a spreadsheet to search for my needle-in-a-haystack.

(Also: Yes, in cases where I know how the event name begins, it will be quick to find if I sort by Active Take Name. I have a naming system, but I will use a more intuitive system with my next project.)
