Can’t Drag and Drop Media?
Posted by Nick Guillory on December 15, 2010 at 5:07 pmHello, I just upgraded to Sony Vegas Pro 10, and I’m just started working on a new project and when I try to drag and drop media from a folder to Sony Vegas my mouse turns into a circle with a diagonol line and I can’t drop the media into the Project. Is it something new with Sony Vegas pro 10 or is something else wrong?

December 15, 2010 at 5:17 pmSounds like the media isn’t being accepted by Vegas. Did that media work for your previous version? I know for example that my Cineform encoded media from NeoScene V1, which worked in Vegas 8 is not compatible with Vegas 10.

December 15, 2010 at 5:21 pmIt did work in the previous version. But its nothing special, just .AVI, .WAV, .MP3, and stuff like that.

December 15, 2010 at 5:24 pmAre you using the 64-bit version of Vegas Pro 10? If so, you will need compatible 64-bit codecs for any formats that Vegas doesn’t natively support (or use the 32-bit version of Vegas Pro 10).
If you can’t drop a WAV file then something is seriously wrong and I would uninstall and re-install because WAV files don’t even use a codec (they are uncompressed).

December 15, 2010 at 5:31 pmOk, but see, the weird thing is that I just got and installed Sony Vegas Pro 10, today. So I should still re-install? And I didn’t need codecs before for sony vegas pro 9. So where would I get codecs?

December 15, 2010 at 5:54 pmJust to be sure, can you open the file within Vegas pro 10? What about a veg file from Vegas Pro 9?
Is the issue simply that you can’t drag from a folder outside of Vegas to a track on the timeline? Or can you not drag from the explorer in Vegas to the timeline?
I’m just trying to narrow down your issue to see if it can be isolated.

December 15, 2010 at 5:59 pmI can click on Import and then select a file, but I just can’t drag and drop like I used to be able to with sony vegas pro 9. Dragging and dropping is just less time consuming and easier for me.

December 15, 2010 at 6:09 pmJust to be sure, can you drag from the explorer pane within Vegas? Also, do you have a video track header on the timeline?

December 15, 2010 at 6:16 pmI can drag things around in vegas, just not from an open window in windows explorer to vegas. And how do I put a track header in the timeline? Because I don’t think I have one.

December 15, 2010 at 6:51 pmJust right click on an empty area of the timeline and choose insert video track and audio track. That should not make a difference.
It is odd that you can drag from the explorer inside of Vegas but not from the desktop itself. I would recommend following John’s advice and uninstall and reinstall to see if the error corrects itself on re-installation.
