The programs there are primarily used for cutting commercials or other unwanted parts out without degrading the images but they will do a few other things. You can download a trial free. -
Thanks for the detail and links. I was a little tentative because I wasn’t real sure what the original poster wanted but it sounds like your and my interests are similar. I’ve always had available power in the past but expect to start a project soon that will require a setup like you outlined.
I did have one thing come up recently that I didn’t understand. My laptop is a Sony Viao I’ve had a couple of years with an AMD chip. When I added the firewire card the computer kept rebooting when I tried the external hard drive there but works perfectly fine with the hard drive in the laptop’s original port and the camera connected through the card. Anyone have an idea why this might be?

You didn’t say anything about your budget but if you have to watch your money you can buy external cases on pricewatch.com and install your own hard drives in those. People talk about different brands of cases but I’ve had very good luck with the cheap cases. They aren’t exactly rocket science any more and all seem to handle the big drives now.
If you think you will be going to use DV Rack on a laptop (a great program for recording directly to the hard drive AND a field monitor) be sure you get firewire drives or cases that are both firewire and USB. It is a communication thing and is firewire is recommended over USB. However, you cannot chain the firewire with the camera. You need a second firewire (IRQ reasons) but cards for laptops with firewire are less than $20.
I don’t know if this information is anything you want but it has been helpful to me.

I’m not the pro you are but I also had a buddy with the FX-1 and I decided to wait and buy the Z1. My main interest is feature production and I felt I should hang on for the increased features of the Z1.
I agree that the internal mic isn’t adequate. After examining the forums, I settled on the Audio Technica 897 short shotgun mic. It is supposed to be “better than the Sennheiser 66” and I think it is – and for $249. It is smaller than the Z1 holder but people wrap foam strips or bands from bicycle tires around it and it works fine, EXCELLENT in fact. I forgot a friend turned down my camera volume. When I captured the clip I took the audio into Sound Forge and ran it through two processes and there was NO artifcact, no buzz or hum. The sound was crisp, clear and beautiful. I just got back from shooting on a Calif beach. The wind was blowing and the wind surfers were talking thirty feet away. When I captured the footage I was amazed how clear their conversation was — more than “usable.”
I also like the Color Extraction feature. We shot a blonde reaidng a book at night outside Starbucks. The shot was black and white except for the gold of her hair we dialed in — sort of the “Sin City” look. We did the same in green and red.
I just installed Vegas 6. I first used the disc given out at NAB. It had problems — especially the Media Manage. I downloaded version 6.0a and it installed and is running perfectly — including Media Manager. I’m still experimenting with it.
All in all I’m very happy with my camera.

You can also do this very easily in DV Rack and that program has recently dropped in price. It does a lot for the money. It’s a Serious Magic program.

I was just talking to Sony online ordering the upgrade. I was having a problem with 6.0 Media Manager and they recommended downloading the update — 6.0a He said they didn’t get everything fixed in the disc handed out at NAB. Maybe that would fix it.

Just got back from NAB. Everything changed with Vegas 6 for hdv. Shoot in 1080i. Set up 24p project in Vegas. It now does a perfect pulldown. I saw beautiful footage rolled out frame by frame, no artifacts.
