I don’t have any problem capturing HDV in Vegas 6.0b after using the following script:

1. Plug in Camera
2. Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager
3. Locate AVC/Subunit in the Device Manager
4. Right click, choose Properties
5. Choose Update Driver, and DO NOT let Windows go searching. Choose “I’ll find it myself” (or whatever the dialog actually says)
6. Browse to Sound, Video, Game Controllers to find the driver
7. Locate Sony in the list of Sound, Video, Game Controllers
8. Open the first Sony in the list, and select the DVHS driver as the driver for your camera.

I believe your script was different.

As for editing, Sony help has instructions but Gearshift is easier. How can anyone NOT expect to use proxy files? These files are 4.5 times as big as DV files – huge to work with on today’s computers. And yes, creating them takes some time so sleeping on it is a great idea.

I did do that and it STILL does not work. It says there is no device.

I finally got the camera firewire to “HDV” so now I’m looking for a Vegas setting.

I found a 60 hour After Effects class at a Dallas junior college for $90 with an excellent instructor. It eases the pain and you can get help when needed.

Only jpgs are problems in Vegas. Large pngs are not. Vegas recommends using pngs.

I also watched a FCP demo the other day and the “new” features they were showing were things Vegas did in version 4 and 5. I switched from Premiere. It crashed and every effect was a plugin from a 3rd party you had to buy. All of it is in Vegas. Download a copy and try it.

Also read the forums. Vegas users ALL generally love the program.

It keeps sync perfectly. I’ve probably done 3 or 400 programs with it and never a hitch. Download the trial. The only tricky part is learning the interface and that isn’t bad, just different. Each button tells you what it is about when the mouse passes over it.
