Help Please – Green Screen/Blue Screen? (How to’s?)
Hi folks;
This summer we’re heading to Niagara Falls .. and some other “recognizable spots” up North. I do some video work for Church and wanted to make use of some of these “backdrop shots” of Niagara or the Kelloggs Plant …etc …to then lay shots of the kids in the youth group over.
Here’s my plan … and wanted to see if ya’ll had any pointers/hints… to make this work out as good as possible with what I have. (not done green/blue screen shots before… so not sure if i’m thinking this through correctly)
PREP for BACKGROUND SHOTS
1) planning to take Video camera and tripod with…
2) will take shots of the “recognizable backgrounds” first with my own kids in the shot about where i plan to overlay the youth group kids … then take video without my kids…
3) not taking the shots so that the feet would be seen … just say waste or knees and upGreen Screen portion
Not certain on this … not certain if better to use green or blue (just buy a big sheet?)…. also … is there a better type of lighting (floresent or ?) to use on the subjects standing in front of this greenscreen?If you all have some info to help.. i’d appreciate it.

Lighting the screen properly is the key to chromakey. Green is the preferred because most DV cameras use green for the luma information and you get fewer aliasing artificts (jaggies). Green is also the least likely color you will encounter in your subjects, but with Vegas you can use any color that is not in your foreground subjects.
Light the screen evenly and keep your subjects as far from the screen as practical. Do not make the screen so brightly lit that the subjects are being illuminated from behind by the light reflected from the screen.

It’s an article by Keith Kolbo and it’s pretty concise and spot on. It will give you a pretty good rundown on how to pull the best chroma keys out of Vegas. Follow his advice and you won’t go far wrong. As Steve says lighting is the most important point.

Your shot list is very good. You may want to get fancy while you have the chance, and also take some pan shots from the same angle. This will give the effect that the camera is moving around the subject after you key them in.

Thanks guys for all the ideas and for the links .. much apprec’ all the info! Really looking forward to getting going on this project now . One other thought i had was by taking photo’s from a Trip my family took when we traveled around the US for a month and a 1/2 … hit almost every state. I have all B&W stills … but thought i might actually overlay some of the kids from church in those shots with me as a lil’ kid or something .. or have them walk through the scene or something. (maybe throw some of them up during the video as B&W shots w/ a flash to give the effect i’m showing pics’ of a trip or something .. as long as i can find a good camera click sound on the net).
Guess I’ll have to try it out to see if it works (Devils Tower… Mt Rushmore… Old Faithful…Grand Canyon… Wind Cave.. White Sands .. maybe my problem is to many options to pick from right now for a 30 second clip 🙂
